TRAUMA GENDER DALAM THE GOD OF SMALL THINGS KARYA ARUNDHATI ROY

Roy merupakan seorang feminis dan penulis asal India. Sistem nilai India yang selama ini Roy anggap telah memberi kerugian terhadap perempuan, menjadi landasan kuat terciptanya novel pertama Roy, the God of Small Things. Meskipun cerita yang melatarbelakangi novel ini menarasikan mengenai hubungan cinta dan kasih sayang yang gagal di antara para tokoh, akan tetapi nilai, norma, serta tradisi di bawah kendali patriarkilah sebagai pemicu kegagalan hubungan antara subjek dengan objek. Kekerasan domestik, pendidikan yang dilarang, dowry, hubungan terlarang antar kasta, warisan serta cara janda diperlakukan, merupakan persoalan yang harus dihadapi tokoh perempuan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengungkap cara Roy mendukung perjuangan kesetaraan gender yang dia perjuangkan dengan menarasikan trauma gender dalam novel the God of Small Things sebagai bentuk manifestasi ketidakadilan gender yang terjadi di India. Untuk mencapai tujuan tersebut, penelitianpun dilakukan dengan menggunakan konsep trauma dari Cathy Caruth, teori dari Freud mengenai mourning dan melancholia dan cara analisis dari Kathryn Robson dalam menganalisis trauma melalui tubuh. Hasil dari penelitian ini memperlihatkan bahwa persoalan-persoalan publik dan domestik yang dihadapi tokoh perempuan merupakan isu patrikhalisme lama yang bahkan sesama perempuanpun turut melanggengkan dominasi ideologi tersebut. Namun di sisi lain, kehadiran tokoh perempuan sendiri menjadi simbol perlawanan Arundhati Roy. Roy ingin memperlihatkan bahwaa para perempuan yang selalu dalam posisi serba tidak diuntungkan tetap melawan meskipun pada akhirnya tetap berakhir pada kematian dengan memunculkan death drive pada tokoh Ammu.

Roy is an Indian feminist and writer. The Indian value system Roy considered to be a disadvantage to women all these times became the strong reason in creating her first novel, The God of Small Things. Although the story behind the novel narrates a failed-love relationship of love and affection among the characters, but the values, norms, and traditions under patriarchal control are the main reason that triggered the failed relationship between the subject and the object. Domestic violence, prohibited education, dowry, forbidden relations between castes, inheritance, and how widows are treated, are the issue that women characters must face. The research aims to reveal the way Roy supports the gender equality that she struggles by narrating trauma gender in the novel The God of Small Things as a manifestation of gender injustice exist in India. To achieve the goals, the trauma concept of Cathy Caruth, the theory from Freud about the mourning and the melancholia, and the way Kathryn Robson in analyzing trauma through the body are used by the researcher. The results of the research shows that the public and domestic issues faced by female characters are the old patriarchalism issues that even among the women perpetuates the ideology domination. However, on the other hand, the presence of female figures themselves become a symbol of Arundhati Roy's resistance. Even though the main woman character, Ammu, ends up by the emerging of her death drive, Roy wants to show that women who are always in an adverse position keep on fighting with no surrender.
