Analisis Wacana Multimodal terhadap Representasi Relasi Antarkelompok Sosial dalam Film Green Book (2018)

Green Book adalah sebuah film bergenre drama-komedi produksi Amerika Serikat yang dirilis pada 2018. Narasi film itu bersentral pada relasi antarkelompok sosial yang berkembang di antara dua tokoh utamanya pada masa Segregasi di Amerika Serikat. Kemenangan Green Book dalam The Academy Awards ke-91 dan kesuksesan komersial dari film tersebut dapat mengindikasikan tumbuhnya kembali preferensi dan minat masyarakat global terhadap tema relasi antarkelompok sosial. Terkait hal ini, Green Book dalam pandangan peneliti berpotensi menyediakan ruang refleksi komprehensif dan menarik mengenai perkembangan representasi relasi antarkelompok sosial dalam film kontemporer. Melalui analisis wacana multimodal, studi ini berusaha menguraikan representasi relasi antarkelompok sosial dalam film Green Book. Metode yang digunakan mengintegrasikan Systemic Functional Grammar (SFG) dari Halliday dan Mathiessen (2014) untuk mengkaji aspek linguistik; Visual Grammar dari Kress dan van Leeuwen (2006) untuk memahami aspek non-linguistik berupa elemen visual; analisis intonasi suara yang mengacu pada SFG milik Halliday dan Mathiessen (2014); serta kerangka kognitif dari Cohen (2001) untuk mengungkap efek emosional dari musik latar dalam film Green Book. Berdasarkan hasil analisis, Green Book memproyeksikan sebuah bentuk representasi alternatif pada tema relasi antarkelompok sosial dalam film. Dinamika relasi di antara dua tokoh utamanya selaras dengan studi Pettigrew mengenai empat proses perubahan dalam relasi antarkelompok sosial. Temuan yang paling menonjol adalah adanya narasi role reversal dalam film tersebut. Bentuk representasi ini memiliki arti penting bagi perkembangan representasi relasi antarkelompok sosial dalam film-film kontemporer. Dengan narasi role reversal-nya, Green Book telah menggambarkan bagaimana karakter kulit hitam atau karakter kulit non-putih dalam film dapat tampil sebagai sosok yang beradab, serta mampu dan berdaya; sebagaimana karakter kulit putih tak selalu menjadi sosok yang harus memiliki moralitas dan kompetensi lebih tinggi.

Green Book is a 2018 American comedy-drama film. The film centers on the theme of intergroup relation between its two main protagonists which took place during the Segregration Era in the United States. Green Book's winning in The 91st Academy Awards as well as its commercial success might indicate a resurgence of public's interest on the theme of intergroup relation in movies. In this case, the film was considered as a comprehensive and interesting material which has the potential to reflect the recent development of intergroup relation theme in contemporary movies. Through multimodal discourse analysis, this research aims to construe the representation of intergroup relation in Green Book. The research method used in this study integrated the Systemic Functional Grammar (SFG) of Halliday and Mathiessen (2014) to analyze the film's linguistic aspect; Kress and van Leeuwen's (2006) Visual Grammar to understand the visual element as a part of the non-linguistic aspect; Halliday and Mathiessen's (2014) study of SFG to explain the characters' intonations; and cognitive framework proposed by Cohen (2001) to elaborate the effect of music and sound in Green Book on the audiences' emotional level. Based on the results and discussion, it is revealed that Green Book projects a form of alternative representation on intergroup relation. The relationship's dynamics between its two main protagonists are in sync with Pettigrew's proposition (1998) about four processes of change through intergroup contact. What stands out among the findings is of the role reversal in Green Book's narrative. This mode of representation brings significant meaning on the reproduction of intergroup relation's image in contemporary movies. With this narrative, Green Book has realized a mode of representation in movie where the non-white character can be portrayed as a well-mannered and very capable individual; just as the white character does not necessarily to be presented as a person with higher morality and competence.
