PURITANISM IN NATHANIEL HAWTHORNE'S THE SCARLET LETTER: A DEPICTION OF RELIGIOUS EXTREMISM

The Scarlet Letter, karya Nathaniel Hawthorne, adalah salah satu novel yang menggambarkan praktek Puritanisme di Massachusetts. Melalui cerita Hester, novel ini mengungkapkan bagaimana Puritan menyalahgunakan agamanya. Penelitian ini menggunakan teori lima tanda ekstrimisme dalam agama oleh Charles Kimball untuk menguraikan tindakan ekstrimis yang dilakukan oleh Puritan serta alasannya. Pendekatan sosiologi digunakan untuk memahami Puritanisme di Massachusetts, yang merupakan latar di The Scarlet Letter. Penelitian ini menemukan lima tipe ekstrimisme agama dalam novel, yaitu hukuman kepada Hester, pengidolaan berlebihan pada pemimpin, anggapan masa yang tepat untuk mengatur umat manusia, ambisi buta untuk menyucikan Massachusetts, serta deklarasi perang suci pada non-Puritan. Selain itu, penelitian ini juga mengungkapkan bahwa penyebab tindakan ekstrim tersebut adalah rusaknya pemahaman akan agama, matinya akal, serta keinginan yang besar akan kekuasaan. Penelitian ini kemudian menyimpulkan bahwa Puritan di novel The Scarlet Letter adalah kelompok ekstrimis, dengan keyakinan mutlak yang telah membawa pada ekstrimisme agama.

The Scarlet Letter, written by Nathaniel Hawthorne, is one of the novels that capture the practice of Puritanism in Massachusetts. Through the story of Hester, the novel depicts how Puritans as a religious community abuse religion. The research aims to identify the types and determine the causes of the religious extremism committed by the Puritans as seen in The Scarlet Letter using five signs of religion extremism proposed by Charles Kimball. The sociological approach is employed in this research to understand the practice of Puritanism in Massachusetts at that time, in which the novel was set. The research discovers five types of religious extremism practiced in the novel, which are the Puritan's judgment towards Hester's sin, extreme idolatry on their leaders, perception of the ideal time to rule the human being, blind ambition of Puritanism in Massachusetts, and declaration of holy war to Non-Puritans. It was found that the reasons for religious extremism were the corrupted understanding of religion, the death of common sense, and the Puritan's thirst for great power and sovereignty. The research concludes that Puritan in The Scarlet Letter is indeed a community of religious extremists, where their fixation to deter violations of religious law led them to extremism.
