SARCASTIC EXPRESSIONS IN THE SIMPSONS MOVIE

Penelitian ini mengidentifikasi tentang ekspresi sarkastik dalam film The Simpsons Movie. Penelitian ini juga mengklasifikasikan ekspresi yang diucapkan oleh para karakter ke dalam empat kategori sarkasme yang telah diusulkan oleh Camp (2011): propositional, lexical, like-prefixed, and illocutionary sarcasm. Setelah itu, ekspresi yang telah dikategorikan, kemudian diidentifikasi menurut fungsi ilokusinya dengan menggunakan teori yang telah diusulkan oleh Leech (1983): collaborative, convivial, competitive, dan conflictive. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa ada 20 ekspresi sarkastik yang dapat ditemukan di dalam film, yang mana 85% dari ekspresi tersebut termasuk ke dalam kategori illocutionary sarcasm, dan 15% termasuk ke dalam kategori propositional sarcasm. Sementara itu, kategori lexical sarcasm dan like-prefixed sarcasm tidak digunakan oleh karakter dalam mengungkapkan sarkasme. Kemudian, di penelitian ini hanya ditemukan tiga fungsi ilokusi; collaborative, conflictive, dan convivial. Penelitian ini juga menyimpulkan bahwa sarkasme digunakan oleh pembicara untuk melindungi dirinya dari akibat yang tidak diinginkan yang datang dari reaksi pendengar. Selain konteks dan kesamaan pemahaman, tanggapan dari lawan bicara juga merupakan elemen penting untuk mendeteksi sebuah ucapan sebagai ekspresi sarkastik.

This research identifies the sarcastic utterances found in The Simpsons Movie. It allocates the utterances said by the characters into four categories proposed by Camp (2011): propositional, lexical, like-prefixed, and illocutionary sarcasm. After that, the categorized utterances are identified based on their illocutionary functions by using Leech’s theory (1983): collaborative, convivial, competitive, and conflictive function. The outcome shows that there are 20 sarcastic utterances found in the movie in which 85% of them belong to illocutionary sarcasm, and the 15% belong to propositional sarcasm. However, the lexical sarcasm and like-prefixed sarcasm are not used by the characters in expressing sarcasm. Meanwhile, there are only three types of functions that are found in this research; collaborative, conflictive, and convivial. This research also found that sarcasm is used to protect the speaker from the unwanted consequences that might come from the hearer’s reaction. Besides context and common ground, the hearer’s response is also necessary to detect an utterance as sarcastic expression.
