ANALISIS KONSEP ETERNAL RETURN NIETZSCHE DALAM FILM ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND

Penelitian berjudul Analisis Konsep Eternal Return Nietzsche Dalam Film Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind dilatarbelakangi oleh ketertarikan peneliti pada bidang seni khususnya film dengan tema eksistensialisme. Film yang dijadikan objek materi dalam penelitian ini adalah film Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Penelitian bertitik tolak pada pertama, persoalan eksistensialisme yang ditunjukkan khususnya oleh dua karakter utama bernama Joel dan Clementine. Kedua, tentang konsep mengafirmasi kehidupan yang menjadi inti dari ajaran Eternal Return Nietzsche. Penelitian bertujuan menelaah persoalan eksistensial pada cerita film dan pemahaman filosofis film Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind dari perspektif Eternal Return Nietzsche. Penelitian ini menggunakan kajian kualitatif melalui studi pustaka. Metode yang digunakan untuk menganalisa penelitian ini menggunakan hermenutika filosofis dengan unsur metodis deskripsi, interpretasi dan heuristika. Penggunaan unsur metodis filosofis tersebut didasarkan atas permasalahan yang ada dan sebagai alat untuk mencari pemecahan masalah yang telah menjadi pertanyaan dalam rumusan masalah. Hasil penelitian ini mengungkapkan pertama, konflik eksistensial terjadi dalam film yang digambarkan oleh hampir setiap tokoh yang mengalami ketakutan dalam isolasi eksistensial, kebebasan dan ketidakbermaknaan dalam hidup mereka, yang itu semua akan menuntun dua tokoh utama untuk mengafirmasi kehidupannya secara penuh. Kedua, konsep Nietzsche tentang Eternal Return digambarkan oleh perjalanan Joel dan Clementine yang bersedia kembali pada keabadian. Dengan mengatakan "iya" untuk satu sama lain, beserta segala kemungkinan yang terjadi, Joel dan Clementine menerima seluruh kekacauan yang sudah dapat diduga. Pada titik inilah afirmasi terjadi sebagai sebuah penerimaan dan penegasan lengkap untuk melanjutkan kehidupan.

The research of Nietzsche's concept of Eternal Return in the Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind movie is based on the art interest, especially from the movie that has existentialism theme. The main focus of study for this research is based on the film Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, under a first-person perspective which highlights two main conflicts. The first being an existential crisis between the two main characters; Joel and Clementine, while the second lays emphasis to a life-affirming concept as one of the main teachings of Nietzsche's Eternal Return. This research aims to analyses the existential crisis within the film, as well as to provide a critical and philosophical understanding of the movie in reference to Nietzsche's Eternal Return. This research is categorized as qualitative research, the data is collected through literature review. The method of analysis is guided by philosophical hermeneutics with methodical element of interpretation, description, and heuristics. The usage of this method is based on the existing conflict and as a tool to unravel the conflict under the research question. This research includes two main results; firstly, the existential conflict emphasised in the film is a mundane matter among all characters. However, it deepens itself by looking into the two main characters - Joel and Clementine - which brings problems of death, existential isolation, freedom and the value of their meaningless lives. These problems then push Joel and Clementine to believe that is what determines their affirmation as a whole. Secondly, Nietzsche's Eternal Return is reflected by the character development in accepting their lives for better or worse and reliving it. By saying "okay", the two has accepted the possibilities with a broader thought to all even predictable chaos within their relationship. This point in the movie is where true affirmation is mirrored by the acceptance of continuing their lives.
