The Challenge towards the Hegemony of Heteronormativity as Depicted in "Jenny's Wedding": A Pierre Bourdieu' Social Reproduction Approach

Di Amerika, definisi pernikahan telah berubah. Mahkamah Agung Amerika Serikat telah melegalkan pernikahan sesame jenis. Seiring meningkatnya pernikahan sesame jenis dan mereka tetap berjuang mendapatkan hak kesetaraan mereka, eksistensi masyarakat heteroseksual dapat terancam. Oleh karena itu, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui bagaimana hubungan sesama jenis memberikan tantangan/hambatan bagi hegemoni/dominasi heteronormativitas dan apakah norma gender telah berubah atau tidak. Penelitian ini menggunakan film Jenny's Wedding (2015), sebuah film yang menceritakan tentang pengakuan seorang perempuan sebagai seorang lesbian dan bagaimana masyarakat merespon pengakuan tersebut. Penelitian ini berfokus pada posisi gender, peran, dan tanggung jawab dalam heteronormativitas dan homoseksualitas. Selain itu, penelitian ini mempertimbangkan bagaimana masyarakat merespon pengakuan para homoseksual, terutama lesbian. Studi ini melihat apakah mereka mendukung atau mengakui kehadiran para homoseksual. Studi ini menggunakan konsep heteronormativitas dan proses sosialisasi dan agen-agennya yang terdiri dari keluarga, agama, teman, agen institusi, dan media massa dan membandingkan yang ada di masyarakat pada umumnya dengan apa yang ada di film untuk melihat tantangan bagi heteronormativitas yang berasal dari homoseksualitas. Untuk melihat perubahan norma gender, penelitian ini menggunakan teori reproduksi sosial yang terdiri atas habitus dan arena. Berdasarkan hasil analisis, ditemukan bahwa heteronormativitas digunakan sebagai standar dalam menilai, menyamaratakan, berekspektasi dan berasumsi. Masyarakat yang terhegemoni oleh heteronormativitas cenderung takut, khawatir, dan tidak percaya diri untuk mengakui bahwa mereka terhubung dengan para homoseksual. Merela bahkan menyangka; bahwa sebenarnya mereka adalah salah satu dari para homoseksual atau hanya sekadar bagian dari homoseksual itu sendiri. Akan tetapi, walaupun heteronormativitas menghegemoni mereka kaum homoseksual, pengakuan akan kehadiran mereka memberikan tantangan bagi eksistensi orang-orang heteroseksual karena sebagian masyarakat mengakui dan bahkan mendukung kehadiran kaum homoseksual Selain pengakuan, perubahan norma gender juga menandai tantangan. Heteronormativitas dianggap sebagai habitus. Sedangkan di dalam arena, ketika heteronormativitas dan homonormativitas bertemu, mereka melakukan kontak yang membuat heteronormativitas tidak lagi semurni sebelumnya. Heteronormativitas mempengaruhi bagaimana norma gender mendefinisikan status, posisi, peran pria dan wanita, dan apa yang harus dilakukan dan dikenakan. Ketika homoseksuality mempengaruhi norma gender, pasti ada perubahan di dalam norma gender itu sendiri.

In America, the definition of marriage has been changed. The Supreme Court has legalized the marriage of homosexuals. As the growth of them slowly continues, and they keep struggle and fight for their equality, the heterosexuals might be threatened. Thus, this study aims to know how the same sex relationship challenges the hegemony of heteronormativity and whether the gender norm has been shifted or not. This study uses Jenny's Wedding (2015), a movie tells about lesbian coming out and the reaction from society. It focuses on gender position, role, and responsibility in heteronormativity and homosexuality. This study also considers how the society react on the coming out of homosexuals, especially lesbians. It sees whether they support or recognize the homosexuals' existence. This study uses the concept of heteronormativity and the process of socializations and its agents which consists of family, religion, peer groups, institutional agents, and mass media and compare what happens in society to what happens in the movie to see the challenge towards the heteronormativity from homosexuals. To see the shifting of gender norm, it uses theory of social reproduction which consists of habitus and field. According to the analysis, it is found that heteronormativity is used as the standard to judge, stereotype, expect things, and making assumptions. People who are hegemonized by heteronormativity tend to fear, worry, not confident to admit that they are being involved with homosexual people. They even deny the truth for being homosexual or even just being involved with them. However, even though the heteronormativity hegemonizes them, the recognition towards their existence of homosexual give challenge for the existence of heterosexual since the society admits and supports their coming out. Besides the recognition, the gender norm shifting also marks the challenge. Heteronormativity is regarded as the habitus, the common one. In the field, when heteronormativity and homosexuality meet, they have contact that makes the heteronormativity cannot be said as the pure one anymore. Heteronormativity affects the ways gender norm determines the status, position, role of men and women, what to wear and to do. When homosexuality affects gender norm, there must be changes in gender norm itself.
