Joan Elizabeth Delacourt apostrophe s Neurosis, Neurotic Trends, and Idealized Image in Margaret Atwood�s Lady Oracle

Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk mengetahui perkembangan neurosis dalam kasus yang dialami oleh Joan Elizabeth Delacourt, tokoh utama dalam novel Margaret Atwood yang berjudul Lady Oracle. Penelitian ini menerapkan teori neurosis oleh Karen Horney sebagai dasar untuk mengetahui apakah sang tokoh utama dalam novel tersebut secara tepat digambarkan sebagai seorang neurotik. Penelitian ini berorientasi pada empat elemen dasar dari neurosis: basic anxiety dan hostility, neurotic trends, neurotic conflict, dan idealized image. Penelitian ini dimulai dengan menganalisa pengalaman masa kecil dan masa remaja Joan yang diyakini sebagai langkah awal terbentuknya basic anxiety dan hostility. Selanjutnya adalah perkembangan neurotic trends oleh Joan yang mana akan dianalisa pada saat dia telah bertemu dengan laki-laki yang akan menjadi suaminya di masa depan bernama Arthur. Kemudian muncul neurotic conflict dan idealized image yang mana semakin melengkapi bukti-bukti bahwa Joan adalah seorang neurotik.

This research attempts to figure out the development of neurosis in Joan Elizabeth Delacourt apostrophe s case, the leading character of Margaret Atwood apostrophe s Lady Oracle. The researcher applies Karen Horney apostrophe s theory of neurosis as the basis in order to find out whether the main character of the novel is adequately portrayed as a neurotic person. This research is focusing on four basic elements of neurosis: basic anxiety and hostility, neurotic trends, neurotic conflict, and idealized image. It begins with the analysis of Joan apostrophe s childhood and teenage experiences which are believed to be the primary step of her basic anxiety and hostility formation. The next part is Joan apostrophe s neurotic trends development which are analyzed at the moment when she finally meets her future husband, Arthur. Accordingly, neurotic conflict and idealized image appear to complete the sequential inquiry of Joan apostrophe s neurosis.
