Conceptual Metaphors in Paramore's After Laughter Album

Penelitian ini ditujukan untuk mengklasifikasi metafora konseptual dalam album Paramore After Laughter (2017). Data dianalisis berdasarkan teori Lakoff dan Johnson (1980). Menurut Lakoff dan Johnson, ada 3 tipe metafora konseptual; metafora struktural, metafora orientasional, dan metafora ontologikal. Data penelitian didapatkan dari 11 lagu; Hard Times, Rose-colored Boy, Told You So, Forgiveness, Fake Happy, 26, Pool, Grudges, Caught in the Middle, Idle Worship, dan Tell Me How. Dari kesebelas lagu, terdapat 47 data yang mengandung metafora konseptual. Pada umumnya, data terindikasi dalam metafora orientasional. Terdapat 37 data dengan metafora orientasional karena penulis-penulis lagu bermaksud untuk menceritakan roda kehidupan yang pernah dialami dalam hidup mereka. Delapan metafora struktural digunakan untuk menyampaikan pesan bahwa kehidupan itu penuh tantangan dan perjuangan. Namun, itu juga menjadi pembelajaran tentang makna memaafkan yang tulus. Hanya ada 2 data yang mengandung metafora ontologikal. Metafora itu mencerminkan kehancuran hidup mereka, sebagaimana dapat dirasakan dalam imajinasi manusia dan mempunyai karakter yang dimiliki manusia. Dengan menggunakan metafora konseptual dalam lirik lagu, para pendengar dapat mengetahui pesan dan juga cerita yang disampaikan oleh para penulis.

This research aims to classify the conceptual metaphors in Paramore's After Laughter (2017) album. The data are analyzed based on the theory of Lakoff and Johnson (1980). According to Lakoff and Johnson, there are 3 types of conceptual metaphor; structural metaphor, orientational metaphor, and ontological metaphor. The data for the research are taken from 11 songs; Hard Times, Rose-colored Boy, Told You So, Forgiveness, Fake Happy, 26, Pool, Grudges, Caught in the Middle, Idle Worship, and Tell Me How. From the 11 songs, there are 47 data containing conceptual metaphors. Overall, the data mostly consist of orientational metaphors. There are 37 data containing orientational metaphors because the songwriters intend to convey to their listeners that they had experienced the ups and downs in their lives. Eight structural metaphors are used to deliver the message that life is full of challenge and struggle. However, it also conveys a lesson of the most genuine forgiveness. Only 2 data containing ontological metaphors are found. The conceptual metaphors depict the devastation in their lives, as it is tangible through human's imagination and has human's characteristic. By using conceptual metaphors in the song lyrics, the songwriters enable the listeners to acknowledge the message, as well as the story that they meant to convey.
