An Ethnographic Exploration of Southern Norwegian Second-Hand Cultures

Pasar barang bekas pada konteks tesis ini terdiri dari pasar barang bekas di tempat terbuka dan toko barang bekas. Pasar barang bekas di tempat terbuka hadir di Norwegia Selatan ketika musim semi, musim panas, dan musim gugur. Pasar-pasar tersebut didirikan oleh berbagai komunitas, klub, dan organisasi. Beberapa pasar barang bekas di tempat terbuka juga dapat didirikan oleh perorangan. Di sisi lain, toko barang bekas buka sepanjang tahun. Toko barang bekas juga didirikan oleh organisasi atau perorangan. Studi ini mengeksplorasi budaya pasar barang bekas di Norwegia Selatan yang fokus pada pasar barang bekas di tempat terbuka (baik organisasi, maupun perorangan) dan toko barang bekas dari organisasi. Pasar barang bekas di Norwegia Selatan berkaitan dengan gerakan recycling dan konsumsi berkelanjutan. Di dalam pasar barang bekas tidak hanya berkutat mengenai jual beli, tetapi juga menjadi tempat aktivitas sosial dan kegiatan kultural. Studi ini juga menjadi kritik terhadap perilaku konsumsi di Norwegia Selatan. Pasar barang bekas menjadi aksi yang inkonsisten. Beberapa orang percaya bahwa pasar tersebut mendukung aksi daur ulang dan pelestarian lingkungan. Namun, pasar tersebut juga menandakan inkonsistensi warga Norwegia yang ingin mendaur ulang, tetapi tetap menghasilkan sampah yang banyak.
In this era of online shops and big retail shops, second-hand markets still exist in many places, including in Norway. Second-hand markets in this thesis consist of open space second-hand markets and second-hand shops. Open space second-hand markets open in spring, summer, and autumn in Southern Norway. These markets are established by various communities, clubs, and organizations. Some open space second-hand markets are also opened by individuals. On the other hand, second-hand shops or bruktbutikker open through year. Second-hand shops are also established by non-profit organizations or individuals. This study explores the culture of second-hand markets in Southern Norway and will focus on open space second-hand markets by individuals (non-organization, non-affiliation), open space second-hand markets by organizations or clubs and second-hand shops by organizations. The second-hand consumption are often related to recycling action and sustainable consumption. Second-hand markets in Southern Norway are not only a place for trading, but they are also a place for social activities and cultural activities. This study also critiques consumption behavior in Southern Norway. Second-hand markets become an inconsistency action. Some people believe those markets support recycling action and environmental sustainability. On the other hand, the markets are impact on consumerism in Southern Norway and in other countries.
