Representasi Timur Tengah Dalam Novel Rebel of the Sands Karya Alwyn Hamilton Kajian Pascakolonial

Tesis ini mengkaji representasi Timur Tengah dan melihat jejak dan pengaruh wacana orientalisme dalam novel Rebel of the Sands karya Alwyn Hamilton. Novel yang terbit jauh dari era kolonialisasi maupun dekolonialisasi ini dianggap sebagai novel fantasi remaja yang tidak terpengaruh oleh wacana-wacana orientalisme. Dengan menggunakan konsep Orientalisme Edwar Said tentang kompleksitas oposisi Timur dan Barat yang dibangun melalui konsep representasi dan menggunkan metode close reading, maka berhasil diidentifikasikan bahwa penggambaran lingkungan geografis yang gersang dan wilayah lainnya dengan lingkungan alam hijau, kehidupan masyarakat yang dilingkupi mahluk mistis, inferioritas perempuan, sistem hukum yang tidak beraturan, dan kekerasan serta pembunuhan dalam keluarga dalam novel Rebel of the Sand menyerupai representasi Timur Tengah yang dipengaruhi oleh tradisi Orientalisme pada era kolonial. Berdasarkan hasil analisis ditemukan bahwa representasi tersebut menunjukan wacana orientalisme masih bertahan dan dilestarikan di masyarakat Barat. Dalam hal ini, pengarang sebagai penulis Barat masih memanfaatkan wacana Orientalisme dalam merepresentasikan Timur Tengah dan secara tidak langsung mempengaruhi cara pandang pembaca remaja Eropa dalam melihat Timur Tengah. Melalui novel Rebel of the Sands, pengarang juga mengkritik tindakan masyarakat Barat dalam hal ini Amerika yang mengintervensi wilayah Timur Tengah sekaligus sebagai negara yang berhak untuk melindungi dan menjaga Timur Tengah. Dengan memposisikan sudut pandang pada protagonis Timur Tengah, pengarang menampilkan tindakan Barat yang menurut Barat baik bagi timur. Sebaliknya dari kedudukan Timur tindakan Barat tersebut merugikan. Meskipun di satu sisi pengarang mengkritik tindakan Barat tetapi di sisi lain pengarang menampilkan representasi Timur Tengah yang bersifat Orientalisme, sehingga pandangan pengarang sendiri terhadap Timur Tengah dalam novel Rebel of the Sands besifat ambivalen.

This thesis examines the representation of the Middle East to the traces and the influences of Orientalism discourse in Rebel of the Sands novel. This novel written by Alwyn Hamilton was published far from the colonialization and decolonization era is considered as young adult fantasy novel were not affected by Orientalism discourses. By using Edwar Said's concept of Orientalism about the complexity of the East and West opposition which was built through East and West representation, and by using the Close Reading method was successfully identified that the depiction of arid geographical environment and other areas with green natural environment, people who lives surrounded by mystical being, inferiority of women, irregular legal systems, family violence and murder in the Rebel of the Sands have similarities with the representation of Middle East in the tradition of Orientalism in the colonial era. The result of the analysis found that those representation above showed that Orientalism's discourse is still survived and preserved in western society. In this case, the author as western writer still uses the discourse of Orientalism in representing the Middle East and indirectly influences the way European teenagers view the Middle Eastern people. Through this Rebel of the Sands also the author criticizes the action of the West, in this case America which intervenes in the Middle East region as a county entitled to protect and safeguard the Middle East. By positioning the viewpoint to the Middle Eastern protagonists the author shows that the West action which according to the West are good for the East, on the contrary from the eastern viewpoint the West actions are detrimental to the East. Although on the one hand the author criticizes the West action but on the other hand the author still presents the representation of the Middle East that was influenced by Orientalism's discourses, so that the author's viewpoint on the Middles East are ambivalent.
