HISTERIA SUBJEK DALAM NOVEL THE HANDMAID'S TALE KARYA MARGARET ATWOOD

Penelitian ini mengakaji histeria tokoh novel The Handmaid's Tale karya Margaret Atwood sebagai subjek yang berada dalam cengkraman the big Other dengan menggunakan konsep subjek Slavoj Zizek yang dalam gagasannya menganggap bahwa subjek memiliki faktor psikologis sebagai tempat dimana ideologi bekerja. Sehingga dalam proses subjektivitas, subjek menawarkan tindakan sebagai implikasi subjek untuk tetap menerima atau menolak mandat simboliknya. Hasil dari penelitian menunjukkan bahwa walaupun para handmaids berada di bawah payung dimensi simbolik yang sama, dalam hal ini Republik Gilead dengan paham totaliterisme yang berlandaskan ajaran agama, setiap handmaids menunjukkan reaksi yang berbeda dalam proses subjektivasi dengan memberi jarak antara dirinya dengan Gilead yang dialami dalam posisi histeria. Sebagai handmaid, Offred dan Moira berada dalam posisi histeria dengan menunjukkan dialektika antara hasrat dirinya sebagai individu dengan permintaan Gilead sebagai the big Other yang harus dijadikan sebagai hasratnya. Moira kemudian menemui dirinya sebagai subjek autentik setelah menolak identitas handmaid dengan melakukan tindakan radikal, namun keautentikan Moira menjadi temporal dengan kembali terjerat oleh simbol baru sebagai Jezebel. Sedangkan ketakutan Offred untuk melakukan tindakan melepaskan diri dari tatanan simbolik Gilead menyebabkan Offred tetap menjadi subjek histeris dan membiarkan ideologi bekerja secara sinis dalam dirinya. Demikian pula Atwood yang menunjukkan sinisme dirinya dalam penulisan novel HT dan tindakan radikal yang disajikannya melalui tokoh Moira menjadi gambaran hasrat Atwood yang tidak bisa direalisasikan dalam realita kehidupannya.

This study analyses the hysteria of the character of The Handmaid's Tale novel by Margaret Atwood as a subject in the grip of the big Other by using the concept of the subject by Slavoj Zizek which considers that the subject has psychological factors as a place where ideology works. Therefore, in the process of subjectivity, the subject offers action as the subject's implication to continue to accept or reject the symbolic mandate. The results of this study show that although the handmaids were under the umbrella of the same symbolic dimension, in this case, the Gilead Republic with totalitarianism based on religious doctrine, every character showed a different reaction in the process of subjectivity by giving her the distance with the Gilead experienced in the hysteria position. As a handmaid, Offred and Moira were in a hysteria position by showing the dialectic between her desire as an individual and the demand of Gilead as the big Other that had to be taken as her passion. Moira then found herself as an authentic subject after rejecting the handmaid's identity by taking radical actions, but the authenticity of Moira became temporal after entangled by a new symbol as Jezebel. Whereas the fear of Offred in taking action to escape the symbolic order of Gilead caused her to remain a hysterical subject and let ideology work cynically in her. Similarly, Atwood who showed her cynicism in writing the HT novel, and the radical actions given by the character of Moira reflect Atwood's desire that cannot be realized in her real life.
