Symbolism in Nature's Haunting as Seen in Algernon Blackwood's The Willows

Skripsi ini menelaah karya Algernon Blackwood yang berjudul The Willows, pada simbolisme yang terkandung dalam imajeri mistik (supernatural). Aspek supernatural dalam The Willows termanifestasi pada alam. Dua lelaki berkano di Sungai Danube, berlindung dari cuaca ekstrem di sebuah pulau kecil terpencil, pulau yang ditumbuhi pephonan willow. Imajeri yang kuat dalam penggambaran alam merujuk pada mistik. Di tengah-tengah semuanya adalah pohon-pohon willow. Kombinasi elemen-elemen tersebut mengisyaratkan potensi simbolisme. Menerapkan pendekatan intrinsik oleh Ren(e-acute) Wellek dan Austin Warren, riset ini dilanjutkan dengan metode tinjauan pustika. Dalam penerapannya, pendekatan intrinsik membaca materi dan struktur dalam The Willows; melihat bagaimana sistem norma di dalamnya membangun dunia cerita. Dari pembacaan tersebut, aspek supernatural diamati. Data sekunder dikumpulkan dari sumber-sumber terpercaya untuk mendukung analisis imajeri pada supernatural The Willows, dan kemungkinan simbolisme di dalamnya. Dari hasil riset, ditemukan bahwa simbolisme dalam imajeri supernatural secara keseluruhan meresonansi imaji dewi, terkucilkan dalam esoterisme dan keasingan, dalam misteri dan ketidaktahuan.

This graduating paper studies Algernon Blackwood's The Willows in the symbolism contained within the imagery of the haunting (supernatural). The supernatural in The Willows manifested in nature. Two men canoeing down the Danube river, taking shelter from the flood in a little island in the middle of an isolated region, inhabited by endless willows. The vivid imagery in the illustration of nature embody the haunting. In the center of it all, stands the willows. Their combination as a whole play on the potentials for symbolism. Employing Ren(e-acute) Wellek and Warren's intrinsic approach to literature, the study uses library research method. Applying the approach, the materials and structure in The Willows are examined to determine the system of norms in the construct of the universe of The Willows. In which from it, the supernatural is observed. Secondary data are gathered from verified sources to support the analysis on the imagery of the supernatural, and the possible symbolism it contained. The research finds the symbolism within the imagery of the supernatural as a whole is that of a feminine divine, estranged in its esotericism and unfamiliarity, in its mystery and its unknown.
