Meskipun sastra kerap dipandang sebagai karya yang mengekspresikan jiwa pengarangnya sejak periode romantik, kritikus sastra mengatakan bahwa pada kenyataannya banyak sastrawan yang menulis sastra sebagai cerminan masyarakat. Dalam menciptakan sebuah karya, faktor eksternal seperti konteks sosial pengarang, lingkungan sosial tempat pengarang berada, termasuk unsur-unsur kebudayaan bisa mempengaruhi pengarang dalam menciptakan karya sastra itu sendiri. Penelitian ini membahas individualisme dalam cerpen "Ellibeitheoe Kkin Geu Namjaneun Eotteokhe Dwaeottna?" karya Kim Young-ha menggunakan teori sosiologi sastra dan teori dimensi budaya. Melalui pendekatan sosiologi sastra, individualisme masyarakat modern Korea yang tercermin pada cerpen dapat terkuak. Selain itu, hubungan antara konten dalam cerpen tersebut dengan gejala sosial yang relevan di luar dari karya itu juga dapat dipahami. Teori kedua yaitu teori dimensi budaya digunakan untuk membatasi definisi dan karakteristik individualisme yang dicerminkan oleh tokoh dalam cerpen. Hasil dari analisis yang telah dilakukan menunjukkan adanya tiga karakteristik individualisme yang ditunjukkan oleh para tokoh, yaitu kecenderungan para tokoh mementingkan diri mereka sendiri; kebebasan dalam menyampaikan pendapat pribadi mereka; dan pola komunikasi para tokoh yang cenderung berkonteks rendah. Secara keseluruhan, dapat diketahui bahwa cerpen ini merupakan bentuk kritik pengarang terkait dengan semakin tingginya individualisme di kalangan masyarakat modern Korea.

Despite the fact that literature is often regarded as a work that expresses the soul of the author since the Romantic Era, still there are some literary critics who said that a lot of writers create literature as a reflection of society. During the writing process, external factors such as author's social context, the social environment where the author lived, including cultural elements can affect the literary works. This study discusses individualism in Kim Young-ha's short story titled 'Ellibeitheoe Kkin Geu Namjaneun Eottheokke Dwaeottna?' by using sociology of literature and cultural dimension theory. Through sociology of literature approach, the context of individualism in modern Korean society reflected in the short story can be learned. In addition, the relationship between this short story with relevant social condition outside of the works can also be understood. The second theory, the cultural dimension theory, is used to limit the definition and characteristics of individualism as portrayed by selected characters in the story. The results indicate three types of individualistic characteristics, i.e. the characters' tendency to take care of themselves only; their freedom to express their personal opinion; and the low-context of the characters' communication pattern. All in all, this particular short story written by Kim Young-ha is a form of his critics about individualism in modern Korean society.
