INTISARI Tesis ini menganalisis struktur ideologi eksternal yang membentuk novel The Broker karya John Grisham dan mengurai kaitan teks novel tersebut dengan ideologi dan sejarah (ideologi teks atau struktur ideologi internal). Penelitian ini menggunakan teori Terry Eagleton yang berkaitan dengan categories for a materialist criticism guna mengungkap faktor-faktor eksternal yang berpengaruh dalam membentuk teks, yakni struktur-struktur ideologi yang meliputi corak produksi umum, corak produksi sastra, ideologi umum, ideologi kepengarangan, dan ideologi estetik, dan juga teori yang berkaitan dengan towards science of text untuk mengungkap relasi teks dengan ideologi dan sejarah. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah kritik materialis yang membagi teks sastra dalam dua kategori, yaitu struktur ideologi eksternal dan struktur internal: adapun yang menjadi variabel bebas dalam penelitian ini adalah struktur ideologi eksternal dan variabel terikatnya adalah struktur internal (ideologi teks). Temuan penelitian ini adalah sebagai berikut; 1) Novel The Broker merupakan karya yang terbentuk karena adanya interaksi struktur-struktur ideologi eksternal AS. Dominasi ideologi partai republik dalam formasi sosial AS membentuk corak produksi material yang memihak pada kaum kapitalis AS melalui kebijakan ekonomi kapitalisme global yang tercipta. Kebijakan tersebut menguatkan liberalisme AS yang berujung pada terjadinya praktik imperialisme. Kebijakan tersebut berdampak pada munculnya ketegangan dengan negara-negara komunis-sosialis dan konflik-konflik di beberapa negara Timur Tengah, sehingga memunculkan ideologi kepengarangan Grisham dalam pola yang berkontradiksi dan melahirkan kritik atas dominasi partai republik. Kritik tersebut dimediasi oleh idelogi estetik yang juga memediasinya dengan penerbit yang tak terlepas dari kontrol dominasi kuasa partai republik. 2) Ideologi teks menggiring pengarang untuk mengolah teks dalam bentuk cerita novel fiksi. Teks mengimplikasikan kontradiksi pandangan idelogis kepengarangan dengan dominasi ideologi kekuasaan partai republik, dan teks mengacu pada peristiwa-peristiwa yang menjadi dampak atas implementasi kebijakan-kebijakan ekonomi kapitalis global, seperti praktik imperialis AS (neokolonialisme) terhadap negara Islam ketika rezim kekuasaan partai republik berkuasa di AS. ABSTRACT This thesis analyzes the external structures of ideology fashioning The Broker's novel written by John Grisham and describes the text relation to ideology and history (ideology of the text or the internal structure of ideology). This research applies Terry Eagleton's theory dealing with Categories for a Materialist Criticism to reveal the external factors which influence in forming text, that is the ideology structures including general mode of production, literary mode of production, general ideology, authorial ideology, aesthetic ideology and also theory dealing with Towards a Science of the Text to reveal the text relation with ideology and history. The method used in this research is materialist criticism dividing the literay text into two categories namely the external structures of ideology and the internal structure of ideology. The two variables which is on this research are independent variable is the external structure of ideology and dependent variable is the internal structure of ideology (the ideologi of the texts). Finding of the research is as follows: 1) The Broker novel is a literary work fashioned by the interaction of the US's external structures of ideology. The domination of the Republican Party's ideology in the US' social formation creates the material mode of production taking side of the US capitalists through the policies of the global economic capitalism. The policies strengthen US' liberalism that lead to the imperialism practices. The policies had an impact on the tenseness with communist-socialist countries and conflicts in some Middle East countries, so that brings out Grisham's authorial ideology in contradictory side and creates the criticism upon the domination of the Republican Party. The criticism is mediated by an aesthetic ideology also mediating it with the publishers in controlled by the domination of the Republican Party. 2) The ideology of the text drives the author to process text in the form of a fiction novel. The text implies the contradiction of Grisham's authorial ideology with the domination ideology of the US' Republican Party, and text refers to the events impacted by the implementation of the global capitalism economic policies, such as US imperialist practices (neocolonialism) against the Islamic states when the regime of Republican Party dominates US.
