GREEK MYTHOLOGY VS MODERN FANTASY: A GENETIC STRUCTURALISM ANALYSIS ON "PERCY JACKSON AND THE OLYMPIANS" SERIES

2018 | Tesis | MAGISTER SASTRAPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk membongkar system mitologi Yunanu di dalam fiksi fantasi modern di dalam kelima novel seri karya Rick Riordan tentang mitologi Yunani yang berjudul Percy Jackson dan Dewa-Dewi Olimpia. Kelima novel ini menggambarkan cerita tentang mitologi Yunani pada masa modern. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan fiksi popular untuk mengamati mitologi yunani dalam fantasi modern. Sebagai tambahan, penelitian ini juga menerapkan genetic strukturalisme Lucien Goldman untuk mengungkap sistem mitologi Yunani di dalam kelima novel ini. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian pustaka dimana data-data penelitian didapatkan dari buku-buku, artikel-artikel, jurnal-jurnal ilmiah, dari website dan serial Percy Jackson dan Dewa-Dewi Olimpia sebagai objek material penelitian. Serial ini merepresentasikan mitologi Yunani dalam masyarakat modern. Mitologi Yunani merupakan salah satu genre populer dalam fantasi modern. Berdasarkan hasil analisis, serial Percy Jackson dan Dewa-Dewi Olimpia merepresentasikan sistem mitologi Yunani sebagai cerita fantasi modern, dengan menggunakan tema-tema fantasi dan formula yang sama dengan cerita fantasi pada umumnya. Tema kebaikan melawan kejahatan dicerminkan melalui karakter-karakternya yang berperan sebagai pahlawan dan penjahat, seperti dalam kebanyakan cerita fantasi. Dunia fantasi di dalam fantasi modern ini memiliki wujud sebagai peradaban barat, yang menggambarkan eksistensi bersama antara dunia manusia dan dunia mitologi Yunani. Sistem supernatural yang merupakan homolog dari sistem di masyarakat dalam serial ini digambarkan melalui interaksi para dewa Olimpia, dewa-dewi Yunani, Titan dan juga makhluk-makhluk mitologi lainnya. Digambarkan juga melalui peranan penting demigod-demigod Yunani, ramalan-ramalan serta petualangan-petualangan yang membentuk sistem supernatural di dalam serial ini. Secara keseluruhan, serial ini memperlihatkan bahwa cerita-cerita mitologi Yunani masih tetap hidup sebagai sebuah genre populer dari fantasi modern
This research intends to unravel the Greek mythology system in the modern fantasy fiction in Rick Riordan five novel series of Greek mythology story: Percy Jackson and The Olympian. These five novels are presenting the Greek mythology story in modern time background. This research employs the Popular Fiction approach to examine the Greek mythology in modern fantasy. In addition, this research also utilizes Lucien Goldman genetic structuralism to uncover the Greek mythology system within these five novels. This research is library research where the data are obtained from books, articles, journals, webs and the Percy Jackson and The Olympians series as the literary work. Percy Jackson and the Olympians novels are the representation of the Greek mythology in modern society. Greek mythology is one of the popular genre of modern fantasy. Based on the analysis, Percy Jackson and The Olympians series are presenting Greek mythology system as the modern fantasy story, employing the common moral fantasy and formula as the fantasy story in general. The West civilization is the fantasy world in this modern fantasy, reflecting the coexistence of both the mortal world and the Greek mythology world. The characters in this series could be divided into the hero and villain characters as typically like the characters in the fantasy story. The supernatural system in this series is the homology of similarity between the series and the society. The gods and deities along with the significant role of Greek demigods, prophecies and quest, are creating the supernatural system of the Greek mythology in this series. This series overall show that Greek mythology stories are still alive as popular genre to read in the form of modern fantasy.
