Kelahiran seni ketujuh yang disebut film menandai pula revolusi seni pertunjukan yang bergerak dari seni panggung ke seni layar perak. Pada awal abad ke-20 dimulailah industri dari seni yang baru ini di Eropa, dan yang terbesar berada di Hollywood, Amerika Serikat. Hollywood memproduksi ratusan film setiap tahunnya dan tentu saja film ini tidak hanya dikonsumsi oleh publik Amerika saja, namun juga di ekspor ke seluruh dunia termasuk ke Hindia Belanda. Penelitian ini berfokus pada distribusi film impor yang masuk ke bioskop-bioskop di Jawa pada kurun waktu 1900-1942. Pada awal penjelasan dipaparkan mengenai lahir dan berkembangannya film sebagai seni maupun sebagai industri yang baru hingga pada akhirnya film-film ini sampai ke Jawa. Pada bab selanjutnya dijelaskan para importir dan distributor film yang ada di Jawa pada masa itu, tak lupa pula dipaparkan data mengenai film-film yang diimpor ke Jawa. Bagian terkahir merupakan kesimpulan dari seluruh penjelasan yang telah dipaparkan.

The birth of the seventh art called film also marks the revolution of the performing arts that moves from stage art to silver screen art. Then in the early 20th century, began the industry of this new art in Europe, and the largest was in Hollywood, United States. Hollywood produces hundreds of films each year and of course this film is not only consumed by the American public, but also exported around the world including to the Dutch East Indies. This study focuses on the distribution of imported films that entered the cinemas in Java in the period 1900-1942. At the beginning of the explanation presented about the birth and development of the film as an art as well as a new industry until these films came to Java. In the next chapter described the importers and distributors of films in Java at that period, also presented data about the films imported into Java. The last part is the conclusion of all the explanations that have been presented.
