Fantasi Ideologis dalam The Scarlet Letter Karya Nathaniel Hawthorne

Penelitian ini menguraikan fantasi ideologis dalam The Scarlet Letter dengan menggunakan konsep subjektivitas Slavoj Zizek. Zizek mengemukakan bahwa dalam tatanan simbolik, subjek selalu berada pada kondisi kurang (lack) sehingga terus menerus menghasrati yang riil. Ketika hasratnya terhadap dimensi rill dipenuhi melalui tindakan nyata yang melampaui hukum-hukum simbolik, maka subjektivitas otentik yang terbentuk. Sementara itu, sinisme subjek terbentuk melalui kegagalannya melakukan tindakan di luar dimensi simbolik karena skema fantasi ideologis yang mengalihkan subjek dari perjumpaannya pada yang riil. Analisis tindakan radikal tokoh dilakukan secara tekstual dengan mengidentifikasi dimensi simbolik, dimensi riil yang meliputi momen kekosongan dan tindakan radikal subjek. Selanjutnya analisis terhadap subjek pengarang diidentifikasi melalui konsep gaze (tatapan) Zizek yang menjelaskan bagaimana tindakan penulisan TSL yang mencakup subjektivitas tokoh-tokoh yang dihadirkan Hawthorne didorong oleh hasrat the Other yang berada di luar dirinya. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa ada upaya radikal yang dilakukan subjek tokoh untuk mencapai dimensi riil dalam kehidupannya melalui tindakannya, dalam hal ini hubungan seks pra nikah yang melanggar norma dan aturan dalam hukum Puritan. Pada momen kekosongan temporal, Hester menjadi subjek otentik, akan tetapi, ia kembali terlibat dalam dimensi simbolik. Sementara itu, Dimmisdale sejak awal menunjukkan kesadaran sinis dengan mempertahankan reputasinya dalam tatanan sosial. Subjektivitas Hester dan Dimmisdale tidak terlepas dari Hawthorne yang memegang kendali atas peristiwa dan tindakan tokoh-tokohnya. Dengan kata lain, tindakan radikal tokoh merupakan manifestasi hasrat riil penulis yang tidak terjembatani dalam kehidupannya. Selain itu, fakta-fakta historis juga semakin menegaskan TSL sebagai sinisme Hawthorne yang hasratnya dibangun oleh fantasi ideologis.

This research explains about ideological fantasy in The Scarlet Letter using the concept of subjectivity by Slavoj Zizek. Zizek proposes that in the symbolic order, subject is invariably in a state of lack which constantly makes him desire the real. When his desire for the real is fulfilled by concrete actions which transcend symbolic laws, he becomes authentic subject. Meanwhile, cynical subject is the subject who fails to act beyond the symbolic dimension for the ideological fantasy which distorts subject to achieve the real. The analysis of the subjectivity of characters is textually conducted by identifying the symbolic dimension, the real including the void (ex-nihilo) and the radical action of subjects. Furthermore, the analysis of author as subject is identified by Zizek's concept of gaze which explains how the act of writing TSL including characters' subjectivity presented by Hawthorne through his work is motivated by the desire of the Other in the external realm. The result of this research shows that there is a radical attempt by subjects to achieve the order of real by their actions in terms of pre-marital sex in violation of norms and rules in the Puritan laws. In temporal void moment, Hester becomes authentic subject, yet she ultimately re-engages in symbolic order. Meanwhile, since the beginning of the story, Dimmisdale shows his cynical consciousness by maintaining his reputation in social order. The subjectivity of Hester and Dimmisdale is inseparable by the role of Hawthorne who controls the whole events and actions of the characters. In other words, the radical action of the characters in TSL is the manifestation of the real desire of the author which cannot be achieved in his life. In addition, the historical facts also affirm TSL as Hawthorne's cynicism whose desire is constructed by ideological fantasy.
