Social Criticism against Gentlemen Images in the Victorian Period of England as Seen in R. L. Stevenson's The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde

Zaman Victoria di Inggris ditandai sebagai era perubahan dalam sejarah, teknologi, ekonomi, dan sosial. Dalam terjadinya industrialisasi dan urbanisasi pada masa itu, muncul suatu perubahan baru tentang ide moral yang meliputi nilai-nilai, norma, dan kepercayaan di dalam masyarakat. Di era ini, seorang penulis yang terkenal pada akhir abad sembilan belas yang bernama Robert Louis Stevenson menulis sebuah novel berjudul The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde yang memberi gambaran tentang kompleksitas pada zaman Victoria ini. Skripsi ini menggunakan pendekatan sosiologi guna menganalisis perbedaan karakterisasi dari tiga tokoh utama di novel--Jekyll, Hyde, dan Utterson--dalam menjalani hidup mereka dan menjadi bagian dari masyarakat. Untuk mendukung analysis, digunakan metode riset pustaka dan deskriptif kualitatif serta dibantu dengan artikel, jurnal, dan situs web terpercaya. Hasil dari penilitian ini menunjukkan bahwa Henry Jekyll dan Edward Hyde keduanya adalah hasil represi dari moralitas Victoria sebagaimana Jekyll menyembunyikan batinnya dan memisahkan dua kepribadian dalam dirinya dengan terciptanya Hyde. Sebagai hasil dari kebebasan sisi jahat Jekyll, Hyde bertindak kekerasan dan kriminal yang tidak sesuai dengan moralitas sosial. Karakterisasi Hyde dan Jekyll menunjukkan kritik sosial terhadap pria ideal di zaman Victoria. Sebagai kontrasnya, karakterisasi Utterson mempresentasikan gambaran pria ideal di zaman Victoria. Victorian period of England is marked as an era of historical, technological, economic, and social change. Due to the industrialization and urbanization, there is a sudden change of society's idea of moral values, norms, and beliefs. During this era, the nineteenth century famous author, Robert Louis Stevenson writes The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde that portrays the complexity of Victorian era. This undergraduate thesis applies sociological approach to analyze the different characterization of the three main characters--Jekyll, Hyde, and Utterson--as they live and fit in the society. To support the analysis, the library research method and qualitative descriptive method are applied along with supported articles, journal, and reliable websites. This research finds that both Henry Jekyll and Edward Hyde are the repressed individuals of Victorian morality as Jekyll suppresses his inner-self and separates his dual personality apart, in the form of Edward Hyde. As a result of Jekyll's freedom of evil side, Hyde performs violent and criminal acts that were opposed to social morality. Hyde's and Jekyll's characterization articulates the social criticism against the firm gentleman image in the Victorian era. In contrast, Utterson's characterization represents the ideal image of Victorian gentleman. Key Words: victorian, moral, ideal, duality, social criticism
