FESTIVAL FILM DOKUMENTER SEBAGAI RUANG PUBLIK (Melacak event, issues, dan dokumentasi Festival Film Dokumenter Yogyakarta)

Festival film Dokumenter merupakan festival yang lahir dari semangat kebebasan pasca reformasi. Selain sebagai ruang yang menyediakan alternatif media, festival film ini juga menjadi ruang bertemunya berbagai pihak, dari berbagai kalangan. Ruang ini disebut sebagai ruang publik karena keterbukaannya terhadap publik, dan kemampuannya untuk menjadi ruang dialog bagi banyak orang. Dalam proses penelitian, peneliti menumbuhkan kepercayaan subjek penelitian dengan menjadi partisipan dalam pelaksanaan festival. Dengan metode etnografi, peneliti menilik kembali sejarah dan dinamika yang dialami, dan tema yang diangkat dalam festival. Selain itu, dengan kepercayaan yang telah dibangun, peneliti dapat melacak artikulasi festival sebagai ruang publik. Selanjutnya peneliti menggunakan teori Jurgen Habermas tentang ruang publik, untuk melihat bagaimana Festival Film Dokumenter dapat menjadi ruang dialog bagi warga negara untuk membicarakan kepentingan-kepentingan bersama. Sesudah menilik kembali dinamika festival selama 14 tahun, pemilihan tema festival memperlihatkan bahwa ruang ini muncul berdasarkan respon terhadap isu-isu sosial yang menjadi permasalahan bersama. Ruang publik ini muncul dari apa yang disebut Habermas dengan lebenswelt (dunia kehidupan) dan bukan merupakan produk dari sistem (negara dan pasar). Festival Film Dokumenter mengartikulasikan dirinya sebagai ruang publik melalui program-program yang diadakan, khususnya program Diskusi. Menghadirkan berbagai medium selain film juga dilakukan festival untuk meningkatkan kesadaran kritis publik, terhadap permasalahan sosial yang terjadi di dunia kehidupan. Selain itu, di akhir penelitian ini juga ditunjukan bagaimana festival mencoba merebut ruang publik, yang kini dikuasai oleh ruang-ruang baru. Penelitian ini menunjukan bagaimana ruang publik perjumpaan ini masih dibutuhkan untuk membangun opini publik bagi kepentingan bersama. Terlebih lagi sebagai alternatif atas opini publik yang kini dibentuk di dalam ruang-ruang baru, seperti media sosial, yang rentan terhadap berbagai permasalahan serta dominasi dari negara dan pasar.

Documentary film festival is a festival that was born from the spirit of freedom after the reformation. In addition to being a sphere that provides a media alternative, this film festival is also a meeting room of various parties, from various circles. This space is called a public sphere because of its openness to the public, and its ability to become a dialogue room for many people. In the process of research, researchers foster the belief of the subject of research by becoming participants of the festival. With ethnographic methods, researchers look back on the history and dynamics experienced, and the themes that have been chosen by the festival. With established trust, researchers can track the articulation of the festival as a public sphere. Furthermore, researchers used the Jurgen Habermas theory of public sphere, to see how the Documentary Film Festival can be a dialogue room for citizens to discuss public issues. After reviewing the dynamics of the festival over the past 14 years, the selection of festival themes shows that this sphere emerges based on the response to social issues of common concern. This public sphere arises from what Habermas calls lebenswelt (the world of life) and is not a product of the system (state and market). The Documentary Film Festival articulates itself as a public sphere through its programs, especially the Discussion program. Presenting a variety of mediums besides films is also done by the festival to increase public critical awareness of the social problems that occur in the world of life. In addition, at the end of this study also shows how the festival trying to seize the public sphere, which is now controlled by new spheres. This study shows how the public sphere of this encounter is still needed to build public opinion for the common good. Moreover, as an alternative to public opinion that is now shaped in new spheres, such as social media, are vulnerable to the problems and dominance of countries and markets.
