Hikayat Nakhoda Muda: Kajian Sastra Perjalanan Carl Thompson

Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk menemukan agenda perjalanan yang ada dalam teks Hikayat Nakhoda Muda (HNM). Sehubungan dengan itu, peneliti memformulasikan pendekatan dari Carl Thompson mengenai sastra perjalanan pada teks ini. Thompson menyatakan bahwa untuk menemukan agenda perjalanan dalam teks, terlebih dulu haruslah mengetahui pola penggambaran dunia dan representasi liyan teks tersebut. Adapun metode kerja yang digunakan adalah metode historis, perbandingan, dan inferensi. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa penggambaran dunia dalam HNM sepenuhnya subjektif karena tempat-tempat, nama orang yang dihadirkan dalam teks ini merupakan rekaan pengarang. Akan tetapi, tidak serta merta menjauhi fakta kultural masyarakat zaman itu. Naskah ini pun menggambarkan budaya-budaya orang Melayu pada zaman itu. Nilai Islam yang memasuki Nusantara kala itu memengaruhi nilai Hindu-Buddha yang telah lama tinggal dan menetap dalam kehidupan orang Melayu saat itu. Hingga terasa dominan dihadirkan narator dalam ceritanya. Penggambaran mengenai orang-orang dan budayanya tidak lepas dari peliyanan yang dilakukan narator. Liyan direpresentasikan oleh narator berdasarkan pembedaan kelas sosial, ideologi, dan gender. Representasi liyan digunakan narator untuk melegitimasi kekuasaan raja. Legitimasi kekuasaan itu dilaksanakan melalui peliyanan yang tidak hanya membedakan, tetapi sekaligus merendahkan. Agenda perjalanan teks ini berdasarkan pola penggambaran dunia dan representasi liyan tersebut berimplikasi etis dan politis. Implikasi etisnya, bahwa teks ini melakukan pelanggaran etis terhadap orang yang dikuasai, serta melegitimasi dominasi gender laki-laki terhadap perempuan, sedangkan implikasi politisnya ialah untuk melanggengkan kekuasaan raja dengan menancapkan kekaguman terhadap kharisma raja sebagai titisan Tuhan di bumi. Kekuasaan ini berkorelasi dengan kepatuhan rakyatnya yang sudah sepatutnya menjadi abdi yang baik bagi raja.

This research is conducted in order to find the travel agenda inside the Hikayat Nakhoda Muda (HNM). The present writer formulated Carl Thompson�s approach of travel literature in this text. Thompson stated that in order to find the travel agenda in the text, we have to know the world�s representation pattern and the Other representation in the text. Methods that the present writer chose to undertake is a historical, comparative, and inferential methods. The output of this research showed that the world�s depiction inside the HNM is wholly subjective because of the names of the places, and the names of the people presented in the text are of writer�s subjective depictions. However, it is not quite far from the cultural facts depicted in the society at the times. The manuscript itself also portrayed the cultural activities of the Malay people at the times. Islamic values which entered Nusantara during the period affected the Hindu-Budha values that have had initially embodied in the life of Malay people at the times. In which predominantly pictured by the narrator in the story. The depiction of the people and their culture cannot be separated from Othering employed by the narrator. The Other�s represented by the narrator according to their class division, ideology, and gender. Representing the other employed by the narrator is to legitimize power of the king. This strategy of power legitimation is conducted through Othering process that not only seeing the difference as well as degrading process for the means of power. The travel agenda of this text based on a pattern of reporting the world and representing the other has ethical and political implications. The ethical implication is that this text contains an ethical violation towards the subjected people, also legitimizing the patriarchal gender domination. And the political implication is to preserve the monarchic power by imposing a charismatic and divine values by viewing a King as a divine power. This power somehow is related with the people�s obedience that�s subjected as a servant for the King.
