Penelitian ini berjudul Novel Seperti Dendam, Rindu Harus Dibayar Tuntas Karya Eka Kurniawan: Analisis Latar Robert Stanton. Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan tujuan untuk mengetahui unsur dan fungsi latar sesuai teori Robert Stanton yang membagi unsur latar ke dalam lima jenis, yakni latar yang terlihat (the visible background), latar waktu dalam sehari atau setahun (the time of the day or year), latar cuaca/iklim (the climate), latar periode sejarah (the historical period), dan orang-orang yang melatarbelakangi (the people in the background). Adapun fungsi latar adalah merepresentasikan tema, memunculkan atmosfer, dan merepresentasikan suasana jiwa karakter. Novel ini memiliki keunggulan dalam latar sehingga berpengaruh penting dalam karakter dan dapat menciptakan suasana dalam peristiwa. Kegelapan, kekerasan, dan peristiwa seksual di pinggiran kota melingkupi seluruh bagian cerita dalam novel. Meskipun pengarang berhasil menampilkan kehidupan pinggiran kota, dengan penggambaran kepadatan rumah, masjid (sebagai simbol pemeluk agama mayoritas), jalan raya, dan juga perilaku bebas tokohnya, pengarang tampak tidak cermat dengan menampilkan keadaan tempat pinggiran kota yang terdapat persawahan, rumah-rumah berjarak ratusan meter, dan sebagainya. Penggambaran ini justru seperti pedesaan daripada pinggiran kota.

This research entitles Novel Seperti Dendam, Rindu Harus Dibayar Tuntas by Eka Kurniawan: Background Analysis by Robert Stanton. This research aims to acknowledge the element and the function of the background according to the theory by Robert Stanton which divines the background elements into five types, which arethe visible background, the time of the day or year, the climate, the historical period, and the people in the background. Thus, the function of the background is to the represent theme, emerge the atmosphere, and represent the characters mind. This novel has superiority in the background so it can affect significantly on the character and is able to create ambience on the event. Darknes, harshness, and sexual harassment in a countryside cover the whole plot of the novel. Although the author succesfully shows the countryside life, with densitydepictionhouse, mosque (as symbol of the majority religion), highway, and also the behavior of the characters freehe seems unaccurately describes the countryside surroundings with paddyfields, distanced neighborhood, etc. This depiction is precisely like the countryside than the suburbs.
