Identitas bukanlah sesuatu pemberian. Identitas adalah sebuah proses menjadi. Setiap individu melewati suatu proses pembentukan identitas untuk memiliki identitas yang diinginkan. Novel Et Au Pire, On Se Mariera (2011) karya Sophie Bienvenu mengangkat tema mengenai proses pembentukan identitas pada remaja. Tokoh utama dalam novel tersebut, Aïcha Saint-Pierre, mempunyai permasalahan dengan identitasnya. Ia memiliki dua identitas etnis yang terdapat dalam namanya, yaitu identitas etnis Arab dan identitas etnis Barat. Akibat nama tersebut, Aïcha merasa tidak percaya diri untuk bersosialisasi dengan teman seusianya. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui tentang proses pembentukan identitas pada remaja dan bagaimana pengaruh lingkungan sosial di dalam proses pembentukan identitas tersebut. Teori yang digunakan adalah Identitas Sosial dari Richard Jenkins (2008) yang menyatakan bahwa identitas merupakan produk dari sosial. Identitas terbentuk melalui interaksi sosial. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa keluarga (faktor internal) dan lingkungan sosial atau peer-group (faktor eksternal) memiliki peran penting dalam proses pembentukan identitas pada remaja. Lalu ketika seseorang kehilangan identitas dirinya, maka dia akan mencoba untuk menggembangkan identitas sosialnya. Setiap individu mempunyai hak untuk memilih identitasnya sendiri. Identitas bersifat dinamis yang dapat berubah sesuai dengan tempat, waktu dan kejadian yang dialami oleh masing-masing individu.

Identity is not something that is given. Identity is a process of becoming. Everyone needs a process to form his/her identity like he/she wants. Novel Et Au Pire, On Se Mariera (2011) by Sophie Bienvenu talks about the process of forming identity of the adolescent. The main character in this novel, Aïcha Saint-Pierre, has a problem with her identity. She has two ethnic identities in her name, which are Arabian and Western names. Consequently, she loses her confidence to socialize and make a relationship with her friends at school. The aims of this research are knowing about the process of forming identity of the adolescent and the influence of social community. In addition, the theory which is used is Social Identity by Richard Jenkins (2008), which states that identity is a product of social community. Identity is formed by social interaction. The result of this research shows that the family (internal factor) and social community or peer-group (external factor) play an important role in the process of forming identity of the adolescent. Hence, when someone loses his/her personal identity, he/she will try to develop his/her social identity. Everyone has a right to choose his/her identity by him/her self.
