Malioboro dalam konteks ruang publik dipenuhi dengan berbagai macam problematik, baik yang bersifat fisik maupun non fisik. 2 problematik yang paling mendasar pada ruang jalan Malioboro adalah permasalahan aksesibilitas dan aktivitas. Sirkulasi pejalan kaki pada ruang jalan Malioboro terbentur dengan konflik parkir dan kendaraan bermotor, sedangkan kegiatan yang menjadi pendorong terbentuknya ruang publik masih belum teridentifikasi dengan jelas. Kedua hal tersebut menjadi konsen kajian pada penelitian Malioboro sebagai ruang publik. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui karakteristik aktivitas dan aksesibilitas sebagai elemen pendorong terbentuk nya ruang publik. Merumuskan tolak ukur tatanan ruang publik Malioboro dengan penekanan pada aksesibilitas dan aktivitas dan menata ruang publik di jalan Malioboro. Metode penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan rasionalistik kualitatif dengan cara memetakan setting fisik aktivitas (place centered mapping) dan sirkulasi jalur pedestrian dengan pembagian waktu (pagi, siang dan malam) untuk melihat aktivitas dan sirkulasi yang terjadi dalam segmen ruang jalan Malioboro. Data tersebut kemudian dianalisis dan dibahas untuk menemukan hubungan ruang yang terbentuk dari adanya aktivitas dan aksesibilitas. Hasil analisis tersebut digunakan untuk merumuskan elemen pembentuk ruang publik pada jalan Malioboro. Hasil penelitian ini menemukan bahwa elemen fix (street furniture dan vegetasi) dan non fix (pkl dan pemain angklung) merupakan pembentuk karakter ruang publik di jalan Malioboro. Elemen fix dan non fix membentuk ruang interaksi. Ruang interaksi yang bersifat dinamis dan memiliki aksesibilitas yang baik merupakan inti dari ruang publik di jalan Malioboro. Ruang ini merupakan pionir atau generator bagi kemerataan terjadinya ruang publik yang menerus. Ruang publik Malioboro adalah ruang publik yang terbentuk karena adanya sirkulasi pada ruang jalan tersebut. Semakin tinggi aksesibilitas (sirkulasi pejalan kaki) pada ruang tersebut, maka aktivitas (interaksi) yang terjadi akan semakin besar. Semakin besar aktivitas (interaksi) yang terbentuk di ruang tersebut, maka peluang jalan Malioboro untuk menjadi ruang publik semakin jelas.

Malioboro as a context of public space is consisted of various problems, both of physical and non-physical problems. In spite of that, the most fundamental problems in Malioboro Street are accessibility and activity. Pedestrian circulation is juxtaposed with the conflict of Malioboro street parking and the vehicles itself, while the activity that shapes the public space is still not clearly defined. Both of these studies will be concentrated on research into Malioboro as a public space. This study is aimed to determine the characteristic of activity and accessibility as the generator element established the public spaces, to frame the Malioboro benchmarks as public space with an emphasis on accessibility and activities, and to constitute public spaces at Malioboro Street. This research method uses qualitative rational approach by mapping physical activity conditions (place-centered mapping) and pedestrian circulation with time sharing system (at morn, noon, and night) for the purpose of seeing the activity and the circulation that occurs in the space segment of Malioboro Street. Furthermore, the data will be analyzed and elaborated to find a connection space as a result of activity and accessibility. The output analysis is used to formulate the constituent elements of public spaces at Malioboro Street. The result of this study found that the fixed element (street furniture and vegetation) and non-fixed element (pkl and angklung players) orchestrates the character of public space at Malioboro Street. The fixed and non fixed element forms the interaction space, a dynamic space and good accessibility as the core of public space at Malioboro Street. This space is a pioneer or a generator for the evenness of the public space constantly. Malioboro public space is a public space that formed due to the circulation in the road space. The higher the accessibility (pedestrian circulation) in space, the greater the activity (interaction) occurred. The greater the activity occured, the higher the opportunity of Malioboro Street into a public space.
