This thesis looks at the growing field of indigenous literature and its application within Indonesia. It argues that 'indigenous literature' in its present conception functions as a form of 'coming to' indigenous identity, or a tool for articulation of indigenous identity taken from Hall (1986) and new form of indigenous-centred methodology (Smith 1999) via the works of Lakoat.Kujawas, a Mollo social enterprise in Timor. To argue this, it first outlines the political and historical construction of 'adat' as indigenous towards the late 1990s in Indonesia, and the subsequent boom of local and adat themed novels, poetry and short stories following decentralisation. It then moves to the primary case of this thesis, that of Mollo community Lakoat.Kujawas, to explore their own construction of indigeneity as Mollo people, looking at the social and political challenges which have led to their writing and archiving Mollo life. In the final chapter, this argument will be highlighted through an overview and analysis of a selection of stories written by the community.
