Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) is a pandemic that has attacked humans globally since the end of 2019. The spread of COVID-19 has caused public anxiety and affects risk attitude, as the result of exposure to information from the media. These conditions can cause uncontrolled behavior in society and of course worsen mental health. This study aims to determine changes in the level of anxiety and risk attitude when news information is presented with gain-loss framing during the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, this study also identifies differences in anxiety levels based on gender classification. This research uses an instrument in the form of a questionnaire adapted from previous studies and modified to the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Identification of the level of anxiety and risk attitude in the initial condition during the COVID-19 pandemic involved 152 male and female respondents aged 18-23 years, with the status of active undergraduate students or bachelor fresh graduates, and stayed in the Special Region of Yogyakarta Province. The gain-loss framing experiment involved 28 respondents selected from the previous 152 respondents with the criteria of having moderate anxiety level, and 28 other respondents selected as experimental control. The Mann-Whitney test is used to identify differences in anxiety level based on gender, while the Wilcoxon test is used to determine changes in anxiety levels and risk attitudes when presented with news information with gain-loss framing during the COVID-19 pandemic. The results of this study indicate that moderate anxiety level and risk averse attitude are the most common during the COVID-19 pandemic. Someone who has moderate or high level of anxiety tends to be risk averse, or avoid any risk due to the perceived discomfort. Someone with a low level of anxiety tends to be risk seeking, or loves and feels comfortable with risks even in the long term. When classified by gender, women tend to be more anxious than men during the COVID-19 pandemic. Information related to the COVID-19 pandemic with loss framing tends to increase a person's anxiety. Information related to the COVID-19 pandemic with gain framing makes someone tend to be risk averse, while information related to the COVID-19 pandemic with loss framing makes someone tend to be risk seeking. Through managerial strategies, such as presenting information related to the COVID-19 pandemic with gain framing, it is expected to be able to control people's risk attitude to create controlled behavior and maintain mental health based on anxiety level.
