Despite being known as The City of Students, Yogyakarta does not have adequate educational facilities including special schools type-D (Sekolah Luar Biasa D, or SLB-D). As of now, people with physical disabilities such as orthopedically handicapped-people still go to the same school with other Exceptional Children, whose needs are different from others. Additionally, Exceptional Children who are enrolled to school have high tendency of truancy as they find school unattractive. On that account, there is a need to introduce SLB-D carried out on the basis of empowering the childrens interests and talents in order to allow children with physical disabilities to have a safe haven, which facilitates them to express themselves while being equipped with the knowledge for the provision of independent living. This thesis draws on earlier studies commenced at various SLB in Indonesia and around the world such as in Singapore and China that focus on the characteristics of SLB typology. This thesis also includes a survey conducted in SLB in Yogyakarta such as SLBN 1 Yogyakarta and SLBN 1 Bantul. From this study, it can be derived numerous key lessons related to the typology of SLB such as the space program, essential facilities and the space dimension. This thesis will introduce Shining with (Dis)Ability, a concept of a special school that prioritizes the ability of students despite their inability derived from their physical limitations. This concept is used to develop practical recommendations that would allow the incorporation of extracurricular activities in school in accordance to the students intelligence in order to improve their enthusiasm to attend school and allow them to obtain a set of skills that interest these students. The proposed extracurricular activities touch upon eight childrens intelligence that would foster the development of students talents and potentials. The space program is also centred on extracurricular activities whereby students with orthopedically handicapped are accommodated with the facilities that meet their special needs, along with the provision of amphitheatre established in the middle of the school for any extracurricular performances. Every children is special. This statement applies to nobody but all Exceptional Children. In light of the fact that one out of four children who drop out from school in Indonesia are Exceptional Children. By establishing SLB-D in Yogyakarta that introduces extracurricular activities based on the interests and talents of orthopedically handicapped-students, it is expected that the dropout rates will be reduced, the enthusiasm among these students will be improved, thus, contributing to their achievements.
