Tindakan penolakan merupakan salah satu bentuk respon yang muncul terhadap suatu ajakan, permintaan, saran, gagasan, atau penawaran yang diutarakan oleh lawan tutur. Terdapat banyak contoh penolakan langsung dan tidak langsung yang dapat ditemui dalam kehidupan sehari-hari. Penelitian ini akan mengkaji strategi penolakan tidak langsung dalam film La Belle et La Bete tahun 2014. Bentuk penolakan dianalisis dengan menggunakan teori Beebe (1990). Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa tindakan penolakan tidak langsung yang dilakukan oleh pihak superior maupun inferior cenderung sama. Apabila tokoh superior maupun inferior memiliki hubungan yang baik dengan lawan tuturnya, mereka akan berhati-hati saat melakukan penolakan, namun jika terdapat hubungan yang kurang baik, tokoh superior maupun inferior akan menggunakan kalimat penolakan yang dapat melukai perasaan lawan tuturnya. Strategi penolakan tidak langsung yang paling sering ditemui dalam percakapan para tokoh adalah penggunaan kalimat interogatif. Faktor utama yang memengaruhi pemilihan kalimat penolakan adalah hubungan antara penutur dan lawan tutur.

The act of rejection is one form of response that appears to an invitation, request, suggestion, idea, or an offer expressed by the interlocutor. There are many examples of direct and indirect rejection that can be found in everyday life. This study will examine the strategy of indirect rejection in the film La Belle et La Bete on 2014. The form of rejection was analyzed using Beebes (1990) theory. The results of this study indicates that the indirect actions carried out by the superiors and the inferiors side tend to be the same. If both superior and inferior have a good relationship with their partner of speech, they will be more careful when creating refusals, but if there is an unfavorable relationship, the superior and inferior will use a refusal sentence that may hurt the feeling of their partner of speech.The indirect rejection strategy which most often found in the conversations in this film is the interrogative sentences. The main factor that influences the selection of rejection sentences is the relationship between speaker and interlocutor.
