ABSTRAK Penelitian ini bertujuan menjelaskan kedudukan Hikayat Pendeta Raghib (HPR) dalam kesusastraaan Melayu klasik. Kisah dalam HPR menyangkut persinggungan antara agama Yahudi yang dianut Pendeta Raghib dan agama Islam yang dianut Muhammad SAW. Dengan latar cerita keagamaan, dibutuhkan sebuah penafsiran yang akan mengupas makna yang terkandung dalam teks. Tujuannya agar makna yang terkandung dalam teks ini dapat terungkap sehingga dapat memberikan infomasi dari persoalan-persoalan yang terjadi dalam konteks sosial masyarakat pada masa itu. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan hermenutika yang diperkenalkan oleh Hans-George Gadamer dengan aplikasi fusi horizon (Horizontverchmelzung). Langkah yang dilakukan adalah dengan menguraikan horizon teks sebagai horizon masa lampau, horizon pembaca sebagai horizon masa kini, dan meleburkannya dalam lingkaran hermeneutika yang oleh Gadamar disebut dengan istilah fusi horizon. Hasil dari penelitian ini adalah menjelaskan kedudukan HPR dalam kesusastraan Melayu klasik yang terletak pada cerita zaman Islam dengan jenis cerita sahabat Nabi Muhammad. Selain itu, penelitian ini mengungkapkan konsepsi dalam Islam yang bermanfaaat dan menjadi sarana dakwah Islam di tengah masyarakat Melayu pada masa itu.

This research aims to explain the position of HPR in Classical Malay Literature. The story told by HPR concerns the contact between the religion of Judaism, which was brought by Pastor Raghib, and Islam, by Muhammad SAW. With religion serving as the background of the story, it needs an interpretation in order to explore the meaning within the text. The purpose is that the meaning within the text can be revealed therefore it can provide the information from issues which occured in the social context of the society at that time. This research employs the hermenutic model by Hans-George Gadamer with application the fusion of horizon (Horizontverchmelzung) in representing the understanding and interpretation of the text. The steps include observing and expalining the text horizon as the past horizon, the reader�s horizon as the current horizon into the hermeneutical circle, which Gadamer called �The Fusion of Horizons.� The results of this research conclude that the position of HPR in Classical Malay Literature lies in Islamic Age Stories with the stories from the companions of Prophet Muhammad. This statement is made by observing and considering the characteristics and traits which have already been explained by literary experts. In addition, it revealed HPR as a saga which became a means to preach Islam in the middle of Malay society during that time.
