La Carte et Le Territoire karya Michel Houellebecq sebagai Kajian Sastra Perjalanan

INTISARI Penelitian ini membahas tentang cerita perjalanan yang berlapis dalam novel La Carte et Le Territoire karya Michel Houellebecq. Pada lapis permukaannya, novel ini menuturkan cerita perjalanan seorang Yahudi di Perancis dan beberapa negara Eropa lainnya. Sedangkan pada lapis yang kedua, berisi cerita perjalanan mental orang Prancis ke lingkungan tempat-tempat dan orang Yahudi yang ada di Perancis. Cerita mengenai Timur yang dibuat oleh Barat. Dengan demikian, akan terjadi negosiasi antara diri narrator Prancis dengan Yahudi. Sehingga penelitian ini mengkaji novel pemenang Prix Goncourt ini dalam kerangka sastra perjalanan seperti yang dipaparkan oleh Carl Thompson. Thompson menguraikan terdapat tiga cara untuk melihat pola sastra perjalanan dengan menggambarkan dunia, mengungkapkan diri dan merepresentasikan Yang Lain. Kemudian dari ketiga cara tersebut akan dilihat implikasi etis dan politis sebagai agenda dari sastra perjalanan. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode historis, metode perbandingan, dan metode inferensi logis seperti deduksi, induksi, dan silogisme. Hasil penelitian dari tesis ini adalah latar belakang sastra yang ditulis oleh Barat mengenai Timur yang memiliki sikap orientalis meskipun lahir di era globalisasi, yang berpengaruh pada pola sastra perjalanannya. Dari pola sastra perjalanan tersebut diketahui bahwa agenda yang dibawa oleh narrator dalam novel adalah agenda neo-kolonial. Negosiasi yang dilakukan oleh narrator dengan menjadikan Yahudi sebagai tokoh utama dalam novel. Sehingga narrator tak lagi merendahkan Yahudi secara langsung, tetapi membuat Yahudi seolah-olah membicarakan keburukannya sendiri. Strategi ini dilakukan oleh narrator yang tentu saja melanggar implikasi etis dan politis dengan merendahkan bangsa lain, yaitu Yahudi.

ABSTRACT This research explains about two layers travel story in La Carte et Le Territoire by Michel Houellebecq. In the first layer, this novel tells about a Jews travel in France and around Europe. And the second layer talks about the mental traveling from the narrator (French) to the Jews environment in France. This is a story about East that is made by the West. Then, it will be built the negotiation between narrator (French) and Jew. So, this research will explore the Prix Goncourt�s winner using travel writing theory by Carl Thompson. Thompson explains that there are three ways to see the pattern of travel writing by reporting the world, revealing the self, and representing the other. And then, from this three ways, this research will explains the implication etis and politic as an agenda of this travel writing. This research uses a historical method, comparison, inferensi logis (logical interference), deduksi induksi (deduction induction) and silogisme (syllogism) This research shows that the literature background written by West about East has orientalist characteristics even though it is born in globalization era. The pattern of the travel writing shows that agenda brought by the narrator in the novel is neo-colonialism agenda. Negotiation that is done by the narrator is making Jews as the main character in the novel so that the narrator does not lower Jews directly but the narrator makes as if Jews talks about their own disrepute. This strategy done by the narrator breaks ethical and political implications by lowering another nation, that is Jews.
