Elite-elite baru Minangkabau bertumbuh di alam modernitas Kota Bukittinggi pada awal abad ke-20. Mereka berhasil dalam dunia ekonomi, intelektual, dan otentikasi status simbolik melalui gaya hidup mengikuti orang-orang Belanda, tapi ternyata tidak terlalu diterima dalam pergaulan sosial dimasyarakat tradisi dan modern di Kota Bukittinggi. Mereka mewakili satu masyarakat yang memiliki ide-ide baru tentang dunia kolonial, tanpa menjadi kolonialis. Berdasarkan hal itu muncul pertanyaan, siapa para elite baru tersebut?; dan seperti apa proses inklusifitas elite baru sebagai modernis, tanpa menjadi kolonial itu? Penulisan ini menjelaskan proses elite baru Minangkabau bernegosiasi dengan modernitas kolonial di Kota Bukittinggi sepanjang kurun 1905-1942. Kesimpulan penulisan ini menjelaskan keberhasilan elite baru Minangkabau bernegosiasi dengan modernitas kolonial sebagai modus yang mengekang sekaligus mengalienasi mereka dari realitas sosial Kota Bukittinggi. Pertama, negosiasi telah memberi ruang partisipasi yang lebih lempang secara orientatif pada elite baru Minangkabau di Kota Bukittinggi di awal abad ke-20. Kedua, negosiasi telah membuka kesempatan mereka menemuciptakan sendiri media-media artikulator modernitas inklusif yang bersifat intelektual. Ketiga, negosiasi menghasilkan kreasi-kreasi bentuk kultural baru yang menghimpun tiga nilai penting Kota Bukittinggi di awal abad ke-20, meliputi tradisi, kolonial, dan Islam.

The new elites of Minangkabau grow in modern Bukittinggi in the early 20th century. They succeeded in economic, intellectual, and authentically symbolic status by following the Dutch lifestyle, yet they were not accepted within social circle of modern Bukittinggi. They represented the people who have new ideas about the colonial world without being colonialist. Accordingly, it poses some questions; who are the new elites?; what are kinds of the new elites as inclusive modernists without being colonial? This explains the process of writing new elites of Minangkabau negotiating themselves with colonial modernity in Bukittinggi throughout the period 1905-1942. The conclusion of this paper explains the success of the new elites of Minangkabau negotiating with colonial modernity as well as alienating themselves from the social reality of Bukittinggi. First, the negotiation has set more scenes for more straightforward orientated participation for the new elites of Bukittinggi in the Minangkabau in the early 20th century. Secondly, it has opened the opportunity for them to establish articulated media for their inclusively modern intellectuality. Third, it resulted in the creation of new cultural forms eventually raising three important values of Bukittinggi in the early 20th century, namely tradition, colonialization and Islam.
