Serial Killer in Popular Literature: A Formula Analysis of Hannibal Lecter Series

Serial killer genre telah muncul pada tahun 1942, dimulai dengan kemunculan novel berjudul The Killer inside Me. Genre serial killer ini menjadi semakin dikenal di masyarakat seiring dengan kemunculan novel-novel seperti Psycho (1960), The Talented Mr. Ripley (1970-1980) and Exquisite Corpse (1996). Pada tahun 1981-2002 muncul serial novel yang mengisahkan kehidupan serial killer bernama Hannibal Lecter. Terlepas dari beragam deskripsi kekerasan yang ada di dalamnya, serial novel ini sangat terkenal dibandingkan dengan fiksi serial killer yang telah ada sebelumnya. Menggunakan perspektif strukturalis, penelitian ini mencoba untuk menemukan formula yang terdapat pada keempat novel Hannibal Lecter. Formula tersebut dianalisis dan dipelajari untuk memperoleh konvensi dan invensi yang terdapat dalam karakterisasi Hannibal Lecter dibanding dengan fiksi serial killer lainnya. Kedua hal tersebut adalah dua hal penting yang membuat Hannibal Lecter bisa diterima dan populer di kalangan masyarakat Amerika. Hasil dari penelitian ini adalah terdapat beberapa aspek dalam karakterisasi Hannibal Lecter yang merupakan konvensi serial killer genre; 1) Penggambaran serial killer sebagai pria kulit putih 2) Penggambaran serial killer sebagai sosok yang kuat dan memiliki intelejensi tinggi. Sedangkan, aspek yang menunjukkan invensi karakterisasi serial killer meliputi; 1) serial killer sebagai hero, bukan lagi penjahat 2) memperihatkan praktek kanibalisme sebagai tindakan berbudaya, 3) menjadi pecinta perempuan, bukan misoginis dan 4) menjadi orang yang suka bergaul. Formula tersebut berkaitan dengan konteks sosial dan budaya masyarakat Amerika sehingga bisa dikatakan konvensi yang terdapat dalam karakterisasi Hannibal Lecter menunjukkan bahwa masih berlakunya stereotype pria kulit putih sebagai sosok yang memiliki kekuatan fisik dan intelejensi tinggi, sedangkan invensinya menunjukkan adanya perubahan dalam konsepsi mengenai hero.

Serial killer genre has been existing in American society since 1942, predated by the emergence of The Killer inside Me. It has become more well-known in society in by the emergence of novels like Psycho (1960), The Talented Mr. Ripley (1970-1980) and Exquisite Corpse (1996). In 1981 until 2002 there is serial novel that narrating the life of serial killer named Hannibal Lecter. Inspite of its violence description, these novels bacomes more popular compared to pervious serial killer fictions. Using structuralist perspective, this research attempts to find out the formula of Hannibal Lecter novels. These formula is analyzed and studied to acquire convention and invention in Hannibal Lecter characterization compared to other serial killer fictions. These two aspects are the foremost things that enable Hannibal Lecter novel series become acceptable and popular in American society. The result of this research is that there are some aspects in Hannibal Lecter characterization that are defined as convention of serial killer genre; 1) depiction of serial killer as white male, 2) depiction of serial killer as being highly intelligent and strong. Meanwhile, aspects that show invention of serial killer characerization are; 1) serial killer as hero, no longer villain, 2) showing cannibalism practice as artistic action, 3) being woman lover, not misogynist, and 4) being sociable man. These formula are related to American cultural and social context that convention in Hannibal Lecter depiction shows the validity of white male stereotype as having physical and intellectual strength. Meanwhile, the invention shows that there is alteration in conception about hero.
