Generator memegang peranan yang sangat penting dalam pembangkitan dan penyaluran tenaga listrik pada suatu sistem tenaga listrik. Generator dalam fungsinya memasok tenaga listrik ke sistem harus memiliki keandalan dan kontinuitas operasi yang baik. Oleh karena itu, generator harus dilindungi dari semua kemungkinan-kemungkinan gangguan dan kondisi abnormal yang terjadi, baik gangguan yang berasal dari dalam generator itu sendiri maupun gangguan atau kondisi abnormal yang berasal dari bagian-bagian lain sistem tenaga listrik. Kalaupun terjadi gangguan pada generator sedapat mungkin gangguan tersebut dapat segera dieliminasi dan dapat mencegah kerusakan pada generator atau sistem. Untuk mendukung hal di atas, generator harus dilengkapidengan sistem proteksi. Sistem proteksi mempunyai peranan yang sangat vital melindungi generator dari gangguan atau kondisi abnormal, mencegah kerusakan akibat gangguan atau kondisi abnormal, dan untuk menjamin kontinuitas operasi generator dalam memasok tenaga listrik ke sistem. Sistem proteksi selain harus mengamankan peralatan instalasi terhadap gangguan, juga berfungsi melokalisir gangguan. Ini berarti apabila terjadi gangguan di suatu instalasi, sistem proteksi hanya akan men-trip-kan pemutus tenaga yang terdekat dengan gangguan sehingga interupsi pasokan daya dapat dilakukan di sekitar tempat terjadinya gangguan saja (tidak meluas). Oleh karena itu sistem proteksi harus dimiliki oleh setiap generator pada suatu pusat tenaga listrik.

Generator holds a very important role in the generation and distribution of electric power to the electric power system. In the function generator is supplying electric power to the system must have a reliability and continuity of good operation. Therefore, the generator must be protected from all the possibilities of disturbances and abnormal condition occurs, both disorders are derived from the generator self or disorders or abnormalities that come from other parts of the power system. Even if there is interference on the generator as far as possible the interference will be eliminated and can prevent damage to the generator or system. To support that things, the generator must be equipped with a protection system. Protection system has a vital role to protect the generator from disorders or abnormal conditions, preventing damage due to interference or abnormal conditions, and to ensure operation continuity of the generator in supplying electrical power to the system. Protection system in addition to securing the installation of equipment to interference, it also serves to localize the disorder. This means, that if interruption occurs in an installation, the protection system will only do tripping the circuit breaker closest to disruptions that interrupt supply of power to do around the scene of disturbance alone (not widespread). Therefore, the protection system must be owned by each generator at a power station.
