The Development of Terrorism within the Internet since 1990s

Pada tahun 1990, teroris grup telah mulai menggunakan Internet sebagai salah satu media mereka karena beberapa keunggulannya. Oleh karena itu, terorisme telah berkembang ke dalam skala yang lebih besar yang tidak hanya memengaruhi lingkungan domestic dan lokal saja, tetapi juga melibatkan masyarakat internasional. Propaganda seperti berita, foto, dan juga video telah menyebar luas dan dengan mudah dapat diakses oleh masyarakat dari seluruh dunia. Seiring dengan berjalannya waktu dan juga dengan berkembangnya Internet, aktivitas online tidak hanya untuk menyebarkan propaganda, tetapi juga membantu mereka untuk komunikasi dengan masyarakat luas, yang di mana selanjutnya berkembang menjadi radikalisasi. Melalu Internet, teroris grup juga telah membuat perang dalam bentuk lain yang fokus kepada tujuan lain yaitu untuk meningkatkan minat dari masyarakat internasional dengan memanipulasi dan memengaruhi mereka melalui ide dan pola pikirnya. Tesis ini akan membahas bagaimana Internet telah memengaruhi aktivitas teroris grup dalam mencapai tujuan mereka dengan fokus terhadap tiga organisasi yang berpengaruh, yaitu the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), the Al-Qaeda, dan juga the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS). Studi ini juga akan menganalisa proses radikalisasi melalui media dengan memberikan beberapa contoh aktivitas mereka untuk membuktikan teori dari mediatization of radicalization.

Due to its various advantages, terrorism groups have started using the Internet as their medium to perform their missions since 1990s. Hence, terrorism has been extended into a larger scale as it did not only affect the local or domestic environment but also involved the international societies. The propagandas such as news, pictures, and videos have been spreading vastly and easily accessed by people from around the world. Moreover as the time goes by and the Internet had been developed, the online activities did not remain as to spread the propaganda, but also to help them communicating with the global communities, which later evolved into a radicalization. Through the Internet, terrorist groups have shaped another war by focusing to another objective which is to gain interest from the global societies by manipulating and influencing them upon their perspectives. This study will examine on how the Internet had affected terrorist groups on their performance to achieve their goals by narrowing to the three prominent organizations, such as the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), the Al-Qaeda, and also the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS). This will also analyze on their media radicalization by providing some of their prominent online activities to prove the idea of mediatization of radicalization.
