Defense Mechanism of the Baudelaire Children In Lemony Snicket's "The Bad Beginning"

Mekanisme pertahanan dari tekanan yang dialami oleh anak-anak Baudelaire dalam novel The Bad Beginning karya Lemony Snicket merupakan topik yang menarik. Anak-anak yang terdiri dari Violet, Klaus dan Sunny dieksploitasi oleh Olaf (pamannya) yang ingin menguasai harta warisan orang tua mereka. Hal tersebut mengakibatkan Violet, Klaus dan Sunny harus berjuang keras di bawah tekanan orang tua asuhnya tersebut. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk meneliti strategi pertahanan anak-anak terhadap stress yang disebabkan oleh tekanan hidup mereka di bawah pengasuhan pamannya. Meskipun mereka masih kecil, mereka telah belajar untuk bertahan di lingkungannya. Secara spesifik, penelitian ini menggunakan teori Objektif oleh Abrams dan teori Coping oleh Lazarus dan Folkman. Teori Objektif digunakan untuk menganalisa hubungan elemen intrinsik dalam novel, yang menekankan pada karakter dan plot. Sementara itu, teori coping digunakan penulis untuk menganalisis strategi anak-anak tersebut dalam bertahan dari tekanan dan penindasan. Hasil menunjukkan bahwa si anak telah belajar mengembangkan proses pertahanan mereka sehingga pada akhirnya mereka bisa mengelola situasi dan selamat dari penindasan.

Defense mechanism of the children against the oppression is an interesting topic in the Novel The Bad Beginning by Lemony Snicket. There are Violet, Klaus and Sunny, the Baudelaire children as the protagonist characters in this novel. They must struggle for their life under control of their new guardian named Olaf. Olaf wants to grab their fortune and exploits them since the Baudelaire children inherit big fortune. This research aims at investigating the children's defense mechanism to manage their stress during the time they are living with Olaf. Although they are still children, they already make strategy to survive in their new environment. More specifically it attempts to identify and analyze the novel by Objective approach by Abrams and Coping theory by Lazarus and Folkman. Objective approach is used to analyze the relationship between the intrinsic elements which emphasized most on characters and plot. Meanwhile, coping theory is used to help the writer to find the strategy of the children to manage themselves from stress and the oppression. The finding shows the children can manage the situation and finally escape from the oppression.
