Sejarah Sosial-Ekonomi Komunitas Tionghoa di Kota Rembang dan Lasem 1900-1942

Awal abad ke-20 merupakan periode penting dalam perkembangan aktivitas komunitas Tionghoa dalam bidang sosial, ekonomi, dan politik di Hindia Belanda. Kondisi tersebut dibuktikan dengan terbentuknya pergerakan modern Tionghoa sebagai respon atas kebijakan pemerintah kolonial dan pengaruh gerakan nasionalisme Tiongkok. Berdasarkan pemahaman tersebut, tesis ini dirancang untuk mengungkapkan perubahan-perubahan yang terjadi di tingkat lokal sebagai pengaruh perubahan di tingkat nasional dan global. Fokus utama tesis ini adalah komunitas Tionghoa di Kota Rembang dan Lasem, khususnya aktivitas mereka dalam bidang sosial-ekonomi. Permasalahan utamanya adalah sejauhmana dan dalam hal apa dampak Politik Etis dan Pergerakan Tionghoa terhadap perubahan-perubahan sosial-ekonomi komunitas Tionghoa di Kota Rembang dan Lasem. Hasil penelitian menunjukan orang-orang Tionghoa mendominasi perdagangan dan perkreditan di Kota Rembang dan Lasem. Sedangkan respon mereka terhadap pergerakan Tionghoa terjadi secara terbatas. Hal itu disebabkan posisi kedua kota sebagai kota kecil dengan fasilitas yang minim sehingga kalangan menengah mapan belum terbentuk. Faktor berikutnya adalah kedua kota tersebut memiliki jarak yang jauh dengan kota besar sehingga pengaruh pergerakan Tionghoa yang diterima kurang maksimal.

Early 20 th century was the crucial period in the development of Chinese community activities of social, economy, and political activities at Dutch Indies. It was evidenced by the Chinese establishment in a modern movement as a responsed of the colonial policy ruler and the influenced of chinese nationalism movement. Based on the explanation above this thesis designed to express some changed in the local level as the impact of their national and global change. The main focus of this thesis is the Chinese community in the Rembang and Lasem city, especially in their social-economy activities. The main problems are how far and what kind of effect Ethical Policy and Chinese movement toward changes social-economy activities Chinese community at Rembang and Lasem city. The result of this research described the Chinese community had dominated trading and credits activities at Rembang and Lasem city. Whereas their respon to Chinese movement was so limited. It because of the position of both city as small city with less facilities so the middle class did not create yet. The next factor was the location was far from the bigger city so they could not maxima taking from the influenced of Chinese movement.
