THE TECHNOLOGICAL ALLIANCE PORTFOLIO DIVERSITY AND ITS CONSEQUENCES ON RADICAL AND INCREMENTAL INNOVATION: THE MODERATING ROLE OF GOVERNANCE STRUCTURE DIVERSITY

Pada penelitian ini, saya menganalisa dampak dari technological alliance portfolio diversity suatu perusahaan terhadap hasil inovasi perusahaan tersebut yang bersifat radical ataupun yang bersifat incremental. Saya mengamati fungsi dari governance structure diversity sebagai moderating variable yang dapat mempengaruhi hasil alliance portfolio diversity pada inovasi yang bersifat radical maupun incremental. Dengan menggunakan 230 sampel data aliansi perusahaan yang terdaftar pada NASDAQ database, saya menemukan bahwa technological alliance portfolio diversity memberikan kontribusi yang positif terhadap inovasi baik yang bersifar radical maupun incremental. Hal ini menggambarkan hubungan yang linear daripada hubungan yang bersifat inverted U-shaped. Selain itu, penggunaan complex governance structure tidak berkontribusi dalam meningkatkan kemampuan perusahaan untuk menghasilkan inovasi yang bersifat baik radical maupun incremental dari technological alliance portfolio perusahaan. Oleh karena itu, saya menyimpulkan bahwa alliance portfolio mempunyai dua dimensi yaitu alliance portfolio diversity dan alliance portfolio density. Perusahaan akan memperoleh keuntungan dengan mempunyai diverse technological know-how yang dihasilkan dari alliance portfolios mereka. Akan tetapi, perusahaan mempunyai resiko apabila alliance portfolios mereka terlalu complex.

In this study, I examine the impact of firm’s technological alliance portfolio diversity on firm radical and incremental innovation. In addition, I observe the role of governance structure diversity as the moderating variable that affects the relationship between alliance portfolio diversity on firm radical and incremental innovation. Using a sample of 230 alliances of NASDAQ listed companies, I find that diverse technological alliance portfolio contribute positively to both radical and incremental innovation, indicating a linear relationship instead of the inverted U- shaped. Moreover, high degree of governance structure does not contribute to improve the alliance technological portfolio to generate radical and incremental innovation. Thus, I assume that alliance portfolio has two dimensions which are alliance portfolio diversity and alliance portfolio density. In one hand, firms will gain benefits of having diverse technological know-how from their alliance portfolios. On the other hand, firms will expose the risks if their alliance portfolios are too complex.
