The Flouting of Conversational Maxims and Its Results in 'New Girl' Situational Comedy

Skripsi ini bertujuan untuk mempelajari pengabaian maksim-maksim konversasional dalam situasi komedi New Girl. Lebih tepatnya, untuk mengidentifikasi jenis-jenis maksim konversasional yang dilanggar, berdasarkan teori prinsip kerjasama oleh Grice, dan mempelajari arti tersirat dari setiap kalimat serta hasilnya. Skripsi ini juga bertujuan untuk mengetahui maksim konversasional mana yang paling banyak diabaikan oleh karakter-karakter situasi komedi New Girl. Data dari skripsi ini diambil dari skrip sitkom New Girl seri pertama episode 1-5.Hasil dari studi ini menunjukkan bahwa semua jenis maksim konversasional diabaikan oleh para karakter, yaitu maksim kuantitas, maksim kualitas, maksim relasi dan maksim pelaksanaan.Kombinasi dari maksim-maksim tersebut juga dilanggar oleh para karakter. Ada 59 pengabaian yang ditemukan, dan berdasarkan dari penemuan tersebut, maksim yang paling banyak diabaikan adalah maksim relasi, sebanyak 28,8%. Skripsi ini juga mempelajari hasil dari pengabaian maksim, yang menunjukkan bahwa terdapat 17 jenis respon, yaitu pujian, ketidakstujuan, saran, pernyataan, persetujuan, tindakan, pertanyaan, penolakan, perintah, penolakan dan permintaan, ketidaksetujuan dan persuasi, pernyataan dan pertanyaan, saran dan pertanyaan, persetujuan dan pertanyaan, perintah dan pernyataan, persetujuan dan penjelasan, dan yang terakhir adalah kombinasi dari persetujuan, pernyataan, pujian, dan perintah. Meskipun ada banyak jenis respon, pendengar tampak mengerti implikasi dari ucapan pembicara.

This research aims to study the flouting of conversational maxims in New Girl situational comedy. More specifically, it attempts to identify the types of conversational maxims that are being flouted, based on Grice�s theory of cooperative principle and study the implied meaning of each flouted maxim. This research also aims to investigate the most dominant conversational maxim that is being flouted by the characters of New Girl situational comedy. This research took data from the script of New Girl situational comedy season 1 episode 1-5. The result of the research shows that all types of conversational maxims, which are maxim of quantity, quality, relation and manner, are being flouted by the characters. There are also some flouting of combined maxims happened in the situational comedy. There are 59 flouted utterances and based on the findings, the most flouted maxim in the situational comedy is the maxim of relation, with the percentage of 28,8%. This research also studies the result of the flouting, which shows that there are 17 types of responses the writer found, which are praise, disagreement, suggestion, declaration, agreement, action, enquiry, refusal, order, refusal and request, disagreement and persuasion, declaration and enquiry, suggestion and enquiry, agreement and enquiry, order and declaration, agreement and explanation, and also the combination of agreement, declaration, praise and order. Although there are many types of responses, it appears that the hearer understands the implied meanings.
