(Mis)gendering the Genderless in Ann Leckie's Ancillary Justice

Dalam Ancillary Justice, Leckie menyajikan Breq sebagai seorang Radchaai yang tidak menganut norma gender. Breq melihat identifikasi gender biner yang dia temui di Nilt sebagai sesuatu yang aneh dan sulit untuk dimengerti. Hal ini menimbulkan kecurigaan pada tujuan penulis yang sengaja menempatkan sudut pandang yang genderless dalam menghadapi gender biner dalam rangka untuk membawa suatu pembacaan kritis mengenai kategorisasi gender. Pertimbangan ini berfungsi sebagai argumen untuk mengeksplorasi pandangan pengarang terhadap konstruksi gender biner. Dengan menerapkan teori Butler mengenai konstruksi gender, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk melihat bagaimana gender biner yang dianggap sebagai identitas yang normal dapat disajikan sebagai sesuatu yang cair dan tidak stabil dan bagaimana identitas genderless yang tidak menerapkan kategorisasi gender dapat disajikan sebagai suatu tantangan bagi gender biner tersebut. Studi pustaka digunakan sebagai metode dalam mengumpulkan data. Penggambaran mengenai Radchaai yang genderless disajikan bersama penggambaran non-Radchaai yang bergender untuk menyajikan perbandingan dengan kekontrasan (atau keserupaan) di antara mereka. Melalui oposisi identitas genderless terhadap gender biner, pembaca akan dapat melihat gender biner sebagai suatu konstruksi sosial yang tidak stabil yang terbuka untuk dimaknai kembali dan identitas genderless sebagai identitas alternatif. Meskipun demikian, wacana genderless disajikan oleh Leckie juga terbukti tidak alami dan tidak stabil. Sama seperti gender biner, wacana ini terbukti sebagai konstruksi social, sebuah efek dari performativitas. Dengan mengkonstruksi karakter- karakter genderlessnya dengan identitas gender biner, diperdebatkan bahwa alih-alih menantang dan menghapuskan kategorisasi gender biner, Leckie terbukti cenderung untuk mereproduksinya. Dengan menghadirkan sosok 'she' sebagai lebih dominan daripada sosok 'he', diperdebatkan bahwa Leckie membawa wacana gendernya kearah feminisme.

In Ancillary Justice, Leckie presents Breq as a Radchaai who does not conform to gender norm. Breq sees binary gender which she comes across in Nilt as strange and difficult for her to understand. It raises a suspicion upon the author's intention of deliberately putting genderless point of view in the face of binary gender in order to lead a critical reading concerning gender categorization. This deliberation serves as an argument to explore her stance toward construction of binary gender. By applying Butler's theory on gender construction, this research aims to see how binary gender which is supposed to be normal identity can be presented as fluid and unstable and how genderless identity with a lack of gender categorization can be presented as a challenge to it The method used in collecting the data is library research. The description of the genderless Radchaai is presented alongside the gendered non-Radchaai to provide comparisons with the contrast (or likeness) between them. Through an opposition of genderless identity to binary gender, the readers will get to see binary gender as an unstable social construction which opens to resignification and genderless identity as an alternative identity. The genderless discourse presented by Leckie, however, is also proven to be unnatural and unstable. Just like binary gender, it is proven to be a social construction, an effect of performativity. By constructing her genderless characters in binary gender, it is argued that instead of challenging and abolishing the categorization of binary gender, Leckie tends to reproduce it. By presenting 'she' as more dominant than 'he', Leckie is argued to bring her gender discourse toward feminism.
