Plak gigi merupakan penyebab penyakit karies dan gingivitis. Akumulasi plak pada permukaan gigi bisa dihambat dengan berkumur larutan yang mengandung bahan antibakteri. Kulit buah apel manalagi mengandung polifenol yang merupakan senyawa dengan aktivitas antibakteri. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui pengaruh berkumur ekstrak etanol kulit apel manalagi (Malus sylvestris Mill.) 25% terhadap akumulasi plak gigi pada anak usia 10-12 tahun. Penelitian eksperimental semu dengan pretest-posttest control group design dilakukan terhadap 16 subyek berkumur 10-12 tahun anak di asrama Aloysius Gonzaga Turi. Subyek dibagi 2 kelompok. Kelompok 1 berkumur dengan akuades, dan kelompok 2 berkumur dengan ekstrak etanol kulit apel manalagi 25%. Aktivitas berkumur dilakukan dua kali sehari, pagi setelah sarapan dan malam hari sebelum tidur. Setelah washing period 7 hari dilakukan crossover. Data skoring plak dilakukan sebelum aktivitas berkumur dan hari ke 4 pada pagi hari setelah bangun tidur dan sebelum melakukan aktivitas. Data dianalisis dengan uji t. Rerata penurunan skor plak kelompok berkumur ekstrak etanol kulit apel manalagi 25% lebih besar bermakna (p=0,002) dibandingkan yang berkumur akuades, yaitu masing-masing (0,63 ± 0,31) dan(0,31± 0,21). Disimpulkan bahwa berkumur ekstrak etanol kulit apel manalagi 25% menghambatakumulasi plak gigi pada anak usia 10-12 tahun.

Dental plaque is the underlying cause of caries and gingivitis. Dental plaque accumulation on tooth surface can be inhibited by rinsing the mouth using solution that contains antibacterial agents. Manalagi apple peels (Malus sylvestris Mill.) contain polyphenol as compound with antibacterial activities. The objective of this study was to find out the effect of rinsing the mouth using the25% ethanol extract of manalagi apple peels on dental plaque accumulation among children of 10-12 year old. A quasi experimental study with pretest-posttest control group design was conducted on 16 children within aged 10-12 year old in St. Aloysius Gonzaga dormitory, Turi Subdistrict, Sleman District. The subjects were divided into two groups. Group 1 rinsed the mouth using aquades, while group 2 rinsed using the 25% ethanol extract of manalagi apple peels. The rinsing activities were carried out twice a day after having breakfast in the morning and at night before sleep. After the rinsing period of 7 days, a crossover was done. Data of dental plaque score were collected before the rinsing activities and at day 4 after get up in the morning, before carrying out activities. The data were analyzed by t-test. The reduction of dental plaque among children who rinsed the mouth using 25% ethanol extract of manalagi apple peels was significantly higher (p=0.002) than children who rinsed the mouth using aquades, with mean (0.63± 0.31) and (0.31 ± 0.21). It can be concluded that rinsing the mouth using 25% ethanol extract of manalagi apple peels could inhibit dental plaque accumulation among children within aged 10-12 year old.
