Novel ini menceritakan tentang Chance, karakter utama yang terisolasi sejak kecil dan kemudian terpaksa bersosialisasi setelah pemilik rumah tempat dia tinggal meninggal. Tujuan dari skripsi ini untuk mencari tahu bagaimana perilaku karakter utama terbentuk dan untuk mengenali perilakunya saat dia menghadapi situasi yang belum pernah dia hadapi saat bersosialisasi. Penelitian ini menggunakan teori pembelajaran sosial oleh Albert Bandura yang fokus pada perilaku karakter utama, untuk menganalisis pembentukan perilaku Chance. Inti dari teori Bandura adalah kemampuan manusia untuk beradaptasi dengan berbagai kondisi yang dihadapinya. Untuk mendukung penelitian ini maka diambil data dari tinjauan pustaka dan beberapa situs internet terpercaya. Hasil dari analisis menunjukkan bahwa perilaku karakter utama terbentuk melalui proses belajar tidak langsung yang dikenal dengan modeling. Oleh karena perkembangan yang tidak sempurna selama dia terisolasi, maka dia mengalami ketidakmampuan secara kognitif serta gangguan seksual.
ABSTRACT This graduating paper analyzes Jerzy Kosinskis Being There. The novel tells about Chance, the main character of the novel who is isolated since he was a child and finally forced to socialize after the owner of the mansion where he lives, passed away. The objectives of this paper are to find out how the behaviors of the main character are shaped and to identify his behavior when he deals with the situation he never experienced when he finally move out to society. The analysis is conducted by using psychological approach, focusing on the main characters behavior. The study applies Albert Banduras Social Learning Theory in understanding the behavior shaping process of the main character. The core of Banduras theory is humans ability to adapt to any situation given and this is what happens with Chance in the novel. To support the analysis, the library research method is conducted. The primary data of the research are taken from the literary work, Jerzy Kosinskis Being There, while the secondary data are taken from library and reliable sources from the internet related to the subject of the study. The result of the analysis shows that the main characters behaviors are shaped through indirect learning, known as modeling. Because of incomplete development while being isolated, the main character is suffering from cognitive impairment and sexual dysfunction.
