THE FLOUTING OF CONVERSATIONAL MAXIMS IN GOSSIP GIRL TV SERIES

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menjelaskan tipe-tipe maksim percakapan yang dilanggar oleh para pemeran utama dalam TV seri remaja Amerika berjudul Gossip Girl. Data yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah percakapan di tiga episode Gossip Girl yang diperoleh dari teks berbahasa Inggris TV seri tersebut. Data yang terkumpul dianalisis berdasarkan Prinsip Kerjasama yang diusul oleh Paul H. Grice (1975). Penulis pun mencoba untuk mencari implikatur dari setiap ucapan. Tipe-tipe pelanggaran diklasifikasikan sesuai dengan Prinsip Kerjasama milik Grice yang dibagi menjadi: Maksim Kualitas, Maksim Kuantitas, Maxim Relevansi dan Maksim Cara. Berdasarkan analisis data, 115 ucapan dianggap melanggar maksim-maksim percakapan dalam Prinsip Kerjasama. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukan bahwa maksim kualitas adalah maksim yang paling sering dilanggar dengan presentase sebesar 40.96%, maksim cara adalah maksim kedua yang sering dilanggar, sebesar 26%, maksim kuantitas adalah maksim yang cukup sering dilanggar dengan presentase sebesar 23.46%, dan maksim relevansi adalah maksim yang paling jarang dilanggar dengan presentase sebesar 9.56%. Selain itu, implikatur atas pelanggaran maksim-maksim ini menunjukan bahwa ditemukan berbagai alasan yang membuat para pemeran melanggar maksim-maksim tersebut.

This research paper aims to describe the types of the conversational maxims that flouted by the main characters in a young-adult American TV Series entitled Gossip Girl. The data used in this research are the conversations within three episodes of Gossip Girl which are taken from the English subtitle of the series. The data were analyzed based on Cooperative Principle that proposed by Paul H. Grice (1975). The writer also attempts to find the implicature of each utterance. Types of flouting were classified according to Grice's Cooperative Principle namely: Maxim of Quality, Maxim of Quantity, Maxim of Relation and Maxim of Manner. Based on the data analysis, 115 utterances are considered as flout the conversational maxims of Cooperative Principle. The analysis shows that the maxim of quality is the most frequently broken with the percentage of 40.96%, maxim of manner is the second most frequent maxim to be broken with the percentage of 26%, the maxim of quantity is the most common maxim broken namely 23.46% and the maxim of relation is the least frequently broken with the percentage of 9.56%. Moreover, the implicature of the flouting of these maxims shows there are various reasons that make the characters to flout the maxims.
