PENGARUH PENGGUNAAN PASTA GIGI DENGAN KANDUNGAN O-CYMEN-5-OL (IPMP) TERHADAP AKUMULASI PLAK PADA PEMAKAI ALAT ORTODONTI CEKAT

Alat ortodonti cekat meningkatkan akumulasi plak yang dapat menyebabkan korosi, peningkatan friksi, memperlemah bahan adhesif ortodonti, merusak jaringan pendukung gigi, dan perubahan momen gaya alat. Kontrol plak yang baik sangat dibutuhkan selama perawatan ortodonti cekat, salah satunya dengan menyikat gigi menggunakan pasta gigi dengan kandungan o-cymen-5-ol. O-cymen-5-ol memiliki efek antimikroba yang dapat membunuh bakteri pada plak gigi. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh penggunaan pasta gigi dengan kandungan o-cymen-5-ol terhadap akumulasi plak pada pemakai alat ortodonti cekat. Efek pasta gigi o-cymen-5-ol ditentukan secara klinis. Lima belas subjek penelitian diminta untuk menyikat gigi menggunakan pasta gigi placebo dan pasta gigi dengan kandungan o-cymen-5-ol. Pewarnaan plak gigi dengan agen disklosing dan perhitungan indeks plak menggunakan metode O'leary sebelum dan sesudah menyikat gigi dilakukan pada tiap subjek. Data kemudian diuji menggunakan independent t-test dan paired t-test. Hasil independent t-test menunjukkan penurunan indeks plak yang bermakna pada masing-masing kelompok pasta gigi placebo dan pasta gigi dengan kandungan o-cymen-5-ol (p<0,05). Hal ini mengindikasikan bahwa menyikat gigi dengan kedua pasta tersebut dapat menurunkan plak. Hasil paired t-test menunjukan perbedaan yang bermakna pada selisih indeks plak antara pasta gigi placebo dan pasta gigi dengan kandungan o-cymen-5-ol (p<0,05). Hal ini mengindikasikan bahwa penggunaan pasta gigi dengan kandungan o-cymen-5-ol lebih efektif menurunkan jumlah akumulasi plak pada pemakai alat ortodonti cekat dibanding pasta gigi placebo.

Fixed orthodontic appliance increases the accumulation of plaque that can cause corrosion, increase friction, weaken orthodontic adhesive materials, destroy periodontal tissues, and change moment in appliance. Effective plaque control is needed during fixed orthodontic treatment, such as brushing with toothpaste containing o-cymen-5-ol. O-cymen-5-ol is an antimicrobial that can kill the bacteria in dental plaque. This study aims to determine the effect of the toothpaste containing o-cymen-5-ol on plaque accumulation in patient with fixed orthodontic treatment. The Effects of toothpaste containing o-cymen-5-ol is clinically determined. Fifteen research subjects were asked to brush their teeth using placebo toothpaste and o-cymen-5-ol toothpaste. Their teeth were stained disclosing agent and plaque index was calculated with O'Leary methods - before and after brushing teeth on each subject. Data were analyzed by paired t-test and independent t-test. Results of independent t-test showed a significant decrease in the plaque index in each group (p <0.05). This indicates that both brushing with placebo toothpaste or toothpaste containing o-cymen-5-ol can reduce plaque. Paired t-test results showed significant differences in reduced plaque index between placebo toothpaste and toothpaste containing o-cymen-5-ol (p <0.05). This indicates that the use of toothpaste containing o-cymen-5-ol is more effective to reduce the amount of plaque accumulation in patient with fixed orthodontic appliance than placebo toothpaste.
