Mengadu Nasib di Tanah Perantauan: Kondisi Sosial Ekonomi Buruh Perkebunan di Way Lima, Lampung (1892-1932)

Tujuan dari studi ini ialah untuk merekonstruksi peristiwa sejarah daerah Lampung, melalui perkembangan buruh di Way Lima antara tahun 1892-1932. Pengambilan topik tersebut dikarenakan sampai saat ini sejarah perkembangan perkebunan maupun buruh pada masa kolonial belum ada satupun dalam historiografi Lampung. Permasalahan pokok pada penelitian ini adalah bagaimana kaitan kondisi sosial ekonomi buruh dengan tingkat eksploitasi dan perubahan struktur pengelolaan perkebunan di Way Lima. Metode yang digunakan pada studi ini adalah penelitian sejarah. Sumber yang digunakan meliputi arsip Perkebunan Way Lima antara tahun 1891-1910; Laporan Tahunan Inspektorat Tenaga Kerja 1909 hingga 1930; MVO sampai tahun 1934; surat kabar pada masa itu; dan telaah referensi yang relevan. Studi ini menemukan bahwa; pertama, struktur pengelolaan perkebunan mempengaruhi kondisi sosial ekonomi buruh perkebunan; kedua, kedatangan buruh migran di perkebunan Way Lima berdampak pada terjadinya perubahan ruang ekonomi di Lampung; dan ketiga, perkebunan di Way Lima membawa hadirnya masyarakat baru dari Jawa. Tesis ini menyimpulkan bahwa kondisi buruh pada perkebunan di Way Lima terjebak dalam kemiskinan.

The purpose of this study is to reconstruct the history of Lampung region especially in the development of labour in Way Lima between 1892-1932. This research highly significance because there are no other studies researches in the historiography of Lampung up until now. The main research question is how the relations between the level of exploitation and the change of the structure management in Way Lima plantation affect the labours socioeconomic condition. This study applied historical method the tracing of the existing primary and secondary sources, as Way Lima plantation archives between 1891-1910; the annual reports of the Labor Inspectorate from 1907 to 1939; MVO until 1934; dailynews, and review from relevant references. Main findings of this study are; first, the plantation management structure affects the socio-economic labour condition; second, the coming of huge number of the migrant labour caused the change in the economic space in Lampung; and third, the plantation in Way Lima causes many migration labour from Java. This study concludes that the labour condition in Way Lima plantation were trapped in poverty.
