Humanity As Seen in Wilde's The Young King and The Happy Prince

Intisari Skripsi ini mempelajari dua cerita pendek Oscar Wilde, yaitu The Young King dan The Happy Prince. Kedua cerita pendek ini menampilkan perhatian Wilde mengenai kemanusiaan. Oscar Wilde menggunakan keberadaan benda-benda yang indah dalam kedua cerita pendek untuk menunjukkan tindakan kemanusiaan. Analisis ini melibatkan transformasi karakter utama setiap cerita pendek dengan menanggalkan keindahan untuk mewujudkan kemanusiaan. Penelitian ini menggunakan tiga dari empat elemen pendekatan strukturalisme dinamis yang dicetuskan oleh Mukarovsky untuk memperlihatkan tindakan yang menunjukkan rasa kemanusiaan yang ditampilkan dalam dua cerita pendek. Tiga elemen dari pendekatan ini adalahunsur yang berkaitan dengan penulis, realitas dan karya.Penelitian dilakukan melalui studi kepustakaan, dengan cerita pendek The Young King danThe Happy Prince sebagai data utama, dan referensi-referensi daribuku-bukuserta internet yang mendukung analisa sebagai data sekunder. Hasil penelitian adalah bahwa benda-benda indah seperti emas, ruby, mutiara, dan safir dianggap sebagai keindahan ragawidanberharga. Keindahan ragawi dapat menghasilkan keindahan yang lebih indah yaitu keindahanspiritual. The young King, the Happy Prince dan the Swallow mengorbankan keindahan yang mereka miliki untuk membantu orang miskin dan membuat mereka tidak menderita lagi. Tindakan pengorbanan mereka adalah simbol cinta mereka, keindahan spiritual dan bukti dari rasa kemanusiaan mereka yang tinggi. Di sisi lain, tokoh-tokoh yang bebal digunakan oleh Wilde untuk menyampaikan ketidaksetujuan atas keburukan masyarakat Victoria Inggris. Dia menunjukkan bahwa tokoh-tokoh yang bebal telah kehilangan kepekaan mereka terhadap orang lain di masa-masa sulit. Singkatnya, mereka kehilangan naluri kemanusiaan mereka. Abstract This graduating paper studies two Oscar Wilde’s short stories, namely,The Young King and The Happy Prince. These two short stories present Wilde’s concern on humanity. Oscar Wilde uses the existence of beautiful objects in the story to show the act of humanity. The analysis involves the transformation of the main character of each short story from abandoning beauty to realizing humanity. This research uses only three out of four elements of the dynamic structuralism approach proposed by Mukarovsky to display the act that showing the sense of humanity presented in the two short stories; they are the author, the reality and the work. The research is conducted through library research, with The Young King and The Happy Prince as the primary data, and the references from books and internet that support the analysis as the secondary data. The result tells that beautiful objects such as gold, ruby, pearl, and sapphire are considered as corporeal beauty. The corporeal beauty can produce the more beautiful beauty which is spiritual.The young King, the Happy Prince and the Swallow sacrifice the beauty they have in order to help the poor and make them not to suffer anymore. Their sacrifices are the symbol of their love, spiritual beauty and evidence of their higher sense of humanity. On the other hand, the ignorant characters are used by Wilde to deliver his disapproval on the ugliness of the British Victorian society. He is showing that ignorant characters have lost their sensibility of others in the hard times. In short, they lost their human sense. Keyword: beauty, humanity, sacrifice, love, ignorant
