Kota Meulaboh dikenal sebagai Bumi Teuku Umar karena menjadi saksi perjalanan sejarah pahlawan nasional Teuku Umar. Peninggalan sejarah juga ditunjukkan dengan adanya benda dan bangunan sejarah yang tersebar diberbagai penjuru Kota Meulaboh. Salah satu situs sejarah yang mendukung identitas adalah Monumen Kupiah Meukeutop yang menjadi penanda lokasi gugurnya pahlawan Teuku Umar, berada di dekat pusat kota. Secara teoritis, identitas Bumi Teuku Umar mengalami pemudaran yang ditunjukkan pada Kawasan Kupiah Meukeutop akibat tidak didukung oleh kualitas fisik yang menarik, rendahnya aktivitas pada kawasan sejarah serta rendahnya makna sebagai Bumi Teuku Umar. Padahal Kawasan Kupiah Meukeutop memiliki potensi pengembangan yang besar jika dimanfaatkan secara optimal karena berada di lokasi yang strategis serta terletak diantara laut dan sungai. Upaya penguatan identitas kota dilakukan dengan menjadikan Kawasan Kupiah Meukeutop sebagai jendela pengetahuan sejarah, baik sejarah perjuangan pahlawan Teuku Umar. Konsep kawasan rekreasi berbasis edukasi dinilai sesuai untuk mencapai pengembangan kawasan menjadi destinasi rekreasi yang turut memberikan pengetahuan sejarah secara menarik melalui elemen fisik kawasan maupun aktivitas agar menjamin keberlanjutan identitas kota.

Meulaboh city known as the land of Teuku Umar, because the city has become a witness of the history of national hero Teuku Umar. The city itself is rich in historical heritage as well, it is shown by the presence of historical buildings and objects that are spread throughout over the city. One of the historical sites that support identity of the land of Teuku Umar is the Kupiah Meukeutop Monuments which was built to be a location marker of death of the hero Teuku Umar, located near the center of Meulaboh city. Theoretically, the identity of Meulaboh city has been weakened as shown in Kupiah Meukeutop monuments that are no longer supported by the appeal of physical attractive, this negative impact can be seen from the low of activities of community in the historical site which cause the lack of meaning as the land of Teuku Umar. In fact the site of Kupiah Meukeutop has the great potential development if used optimally as identity of the city because of strategic location which located between the sea and the river. So the efforts to strengthen the identity of the city is by making the historical site of Kupiah Meukeutop as a window of historical knowledge, to learn and remembrance the history of the national hero Teuku Umar. The concept of education-based recreation area is considered very suitable to achieve development of the area into a leisure destination that also gives an interesting historical knowledge through the historical objects as well as the activity around the site in order to recreate and maintain the identity of the city.
