Peran Bill of Rights Defense Committee dalam Upaya Resistensi terhadap USA Patriot Act

Setelah peristiwa 9/11, pemerintah Amerika Serikat (AS) memutuskan untuk menjadikan keamanan sebagai prioritas utama. Prinsip 'War on Terror' diadopsi sebagai prinsip dari semua kebijakan keamanan yang diambil. Secara domestik, ada sebuah kebijakan dengan nama Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism Act (US Patriot Act atau USAPA) yang menjadi sangat kontroversial karena kebijakan ini mengijinkan pemerintah untuk mengontrol aktivitas masyarakatnya lewat penyadapan. Bagi masyarakat AS, yang sangat menjunjung tinggi kebebasan individu, kebijakan ini menciderai hak privasi yang mereka punya. Alhasil, berbagai gerakan bermunculan untuk menentang kebijakan tersebut, salah satunya adalah Bill of Rights Defense Committee (BORDC). Tulisan ini akan mengelaborasi bagaimana peran BORDC dalam mengadvokasi resistensi terhadap USAPA. Tulisan ini akan menjelaskan aktivitas sukses BORDC di dalam komunitas dan bagaimana gerakan ini secara mengejutkan gagal untuk mempengaruhi Kongres. Tulisan ini dirasa penting untuk melihat bagaimana peran BORDC sebagai kelompok kepentingan dan pengaruhnya ke pemerintah ketika menjalankan aksinya menentang USAPA.

After the 9/11 terrorist attack, the United States goverment decided to put security as a top priority. �¢ï¿½ï¿½War on Terror�¢ï¿½ï¿½ principle was adopted as the principle of every security policy. Domestically, there is Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism Act (US Patriot Act or USAPA) which become so controversial because it allows the government to control the activities of U.S. citizens through surveillance. For the citizens, who really concern about their individual freedom, this Act violates their privacy right. Movements are set up to challenge the Act, one of them is Bill of Rights Defense Committe (BORDC). This paper will elaborate how the role of BORDC in advocating resistency against USAPA. It describes successful BORDC activities on the community and, quite surprisingly, how they failed to promote their cause in the Congress. All of these are important in analysing BORDC�¢ï¿½ï¿½s role as an interest group in American politics, especially in their ongoing move to stand against USAPA.
