Senyum merupakan bagian penting ekspresi wajah yang mempengaruhi keindahan fisik. Setiap ras memiliki tipe senyum yang berbeda. Terjadi perubahan pada tinggi bibir dan gingiva atas dari posisi bibir istirahat ke posisi bibir senyum estetis. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah mengetahui perubahan tinggi bibir dan gingiva atas perempuan Jawa berdasarkan analisis fotogram senyum estetis. Subjek penelitian ini adalah 26 mahasiswa aktif perempuan Jawa Fakultas Kedokteran Gigi Universitas Gadjah Mada angkatan 2012-2014 yang bersedia menjadi subjek penelitian, umur 18-21 tahun, gigi permanen lengkap sampai gigi molar kedua, oklusi normal, belum pernah atau tidak sedang menjalani perawatan ortodonti dan tidak memiliki kebiasaan buruk (bertopang dagu, menggigit pensil/bibir/kuku, menghisap ibu jari, bernapas lewat mulut). Subjek diambil gambar posisi bibir istirahat dan posisi bibir senyum estetis. Pengukuran tinggi bibir dan gingiva atas dilakukan dengan kalibrasi fotogram. Data yang didapatkan dianalisis menggunakan paired sample t-test. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan terdapat perbedaan signifikan antara bibir posisi istirahat dengan bibir posisi senyum estetis. Semakin banyak pemendekan tinggi bibir dari posisi istirahat ke posisi senyum yang terjadi maka semakin tinggi tipe senyum. Perempuan Jawa memiliki tipe senyum tinggi, yaitu memperlihatkan total gingiva anterior atas pada posisi senyum estetis.

Smile is an important part of facial expressions that affect the physical attractiveness. Each race has their own difference types of smile. There are changes in upper lip and gingival exposure between the rest lip position and aesthetic smile lip position. The purpose of this study was to determine the changes of Javanesse women's lip and gingival explosure based photograms aesthetic smile analyze. The subjects were 26 female Javanesse active students of Dentistry Faculty, Gadjah Mada University 2012 to 2014 who were willing to become research subjects, aged 18-21 years, had complete permanent dentition until the second molar, normal occlusion, without previous orthodontic treatment and didn�t have any bad habits (resting chin in the hand, pencils/lips/nails biting, thumb sucking, mouth breathing). Lips picture was taken from subjects both at rest and aesthetic smile position. The measurements of upper lip height and gingival upper lip were done by photogram calibration. The data were analyzed by paired sample t-test. The results of the research indicates a significant difference between the rest lips position and aesthetic smile lip position. It could be concluded that the more lips height shortening occurs, the higher type of smile will shown. Javanese women have high smile type, which shows the total of the entire anterior gingival on the aesthetic smile position.
