Author's Hatred as Depicted in E. E. Cummings' Poem Buffalo Bill's

Puisi E. E. Cummings yang berjudul Buffalo Bill's merupakan puisi tentang kematian Buffalo Bill atau William Frederick Cody. Puisi tersebut ditulis oleh E. E. Cummings tidak lama setelah Buffalo Bill meninggal dunia. Puisi ini merupakan ekspresi dari perasaan penulis tentang Buffalo Bill dan kematiannya. Dengan memilih kata "defunct" untuk mendeskripsikan kematian Buffalo Bill, penulis bermaksud untuk menunjukkan kebenciannya dengan cara merendahkan Buffalo Bill melalui puisinya. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menjawab dua objektif, yaitu: untuk menemukan hubungan dalam riwayat hidup penulis dan riwayat hidup Buffalo Bill dan menyelidiki kebencian penulis dalam puisinya. Karena penulis penelitian ini menganalisis kebencian penulis puisi yang ia ekspresikan dalam puisinya, Author-centered Approach disadari menjadi pendekatan yang paling sesuai untuk diterapkan. Teori tentang kebencian yang digagas oleh Robert J. Sternberg juga digunakan untuk mendukung analisis ini. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa riwayat hidup penulis mempengaruhi ia untuk mengekspresikan kebenciannya secara terang-terangan terhadap Buffalo Bill yang merupakan idola masa kecilnya. Disamping itu, kebenciannya terhadap Buffalo Bill dalam puisinya disebabkan oleh empat faktor: kekecewaan, penyesalan, kecemburuan, dan perbedaan pendapat.

E. E. Cummings' poem Buffalo Bill's is a modern poem about the death of Buffalo Bill or William Frederick Cody. The poem is written by the time William Frederick Cody has just passed away. The poem is an expression of the author's feeling towards the Buffalo Bill and his death. By choosing the word "defunct" to describe the death, the author intends to show his hatred by disparaging Buffalo Bill through his poem. This research aims to answer two objectives which are; to identify the relations between the author and Buffalo Bill in their life and to investigate the author's hatred in the poem. Since the present writer analyzes the hatred of the author which is expressed on his work, Author-centered Approach is considered as the most suitable approach to be applied. The theory of hatred proposed by Robert J. Sternberg is also applied to support the analysis. The result shows the author's life affects him to openly express his hatred towards Buffalo Bill through the poem who is the author's childhood idol. Meanwhile, his hatred towards Buffalo Bill in the poem is formed because of four factors; disillusionment, regret, jealousy, and disagreement.
