Teaching American Multiculturalism through Children Literature: an Analysis on The Journal of Joshua Loper

Riset dalam tesis ini meneliti sebuah novel berjudul The Journal of Joshua Loper sebagai salah satu karya sastra anak yang mengangkat tema multiculturalisme Amerika yang diterbitkan di Amerika Serikat. Sastra anak yang mengangkat tema multikulturalisme menjadi penting bagi pendidikan multikulturalisme di Amerika Serikat karena sifatnya yang didaktik. Meskipun demikian, sastra anak memiliki sifat yang lebih merepresentasikan perspektif orang dewasa mengenai anak-anak dibandingkan dengan perspektif anak-anak mengenai kehidupan mereka. Objek penelitian ini adalah narasi dalam cerita, dialog antara karakter dalam cerita, tulisan tokoh utama, gambar-gambar yang ditampilkan dalam novel dan wawancara dengan penulis novel tersebut, Walter Dean Myers. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan discourse analysis (analisis diskursus) untuk menganalisis sifat-sifat sastra anak yang tercermin dalam novel tersebut. Pendekatan ini digunakan untuk meneliti posisi lebih tinggi yang digunakan penulis terhadap anak-anak sebagai pembaca novelnya. Penelitian ini menghasilkan lima aspek. (1) Nilai-nilai multikulturalisme seperti saling menghormati, pemahaman budaya, dan kesetaraan antar ras diajarkan oleh penulis melalui novel ini. Selain itu, penulis juga menekankan pentingnya pendidikan. (2) Novel yang diteliti menujukkan sifat sastra anak yang didaktik. Penulis novel menggunakan novel tersebut sebagai medium untuk mentransfer pengetahuannya sekaligus mengajari anak-anak mengenai apa yang seharusnya mereka lakukan dan apa yang tidak boleh mereka lakukan sesuai dengan perspektif penulisnya. (3) Penulis novel tersebut menggunakan posisinya sebagai orang dewasa kepada anak-anak sebagai pembaca. Dia menggunakan novel tersebut untuk mentransfer ide dan idealismenya. (4) Penulis novel tersebut percaya bahwa anak-anak memiliki kemampuan dan imajinasi yang terbatas sehingga mereka membutuhkan bantuan untuk memahami apa yang disampaikan penulis melalui cerita dalam novel tersebut. (5) Kata-kata yang digunakan oleh penulis dalam novel tersebut lebih mencerminkan posisi penulis sebagai orang dewasa dari pada seorang anak (Joshua Loper, tokoh utama dalam novel tersebut) membagikan pengalamannya.

The study presented in this thesis is analyzing the novel entitled The Journal of Joshua Loper as one of the multicultural children literature books in the United States of America. Multicultural children literature becomes important in multicultural education in the US for its didactic feature. However, the children literature has the nature that it represents more about the adult perspective about children than the children perspective about their life. The objects of study are the narration of the story, the dialogs between the characters of the story, the soliloquy of the main character, the pictures presented on the novel and the interviews with the writer, Walter Dean Myers. The study was carried out using the discourse analysis approach to analyze the features of children literature presented on the novel. It approaches the intention and the power of the writer used upon children as the readers. The study results in five aspects. (1) Multiculturalism values that are taught through the novel are the interracial respect, race equality, culture diversity. (2) The novel clearly shown the didactic feature of children literature. The writer used the novel as the medium to transfer his knowledge as well as to teach children what to do and what they should not do according to the writer perspective. (3) The writer used his power as an adult over children as the readers. He used the novel to transfer his ideas and idealism. (4) The writer believed that children only have limited ability or limited imagination so children needs some help to understand what the writer have told through the story. (5) The words used by the writer in the novel rather show the writer power as an adult than a child (Joshua Loper, the fictitious character) sharing his experience.
