Tragic Hero as Potrayed by Luke Castellan in Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson and the Olympians Series

Serial Percy Jackson dan Dewa-Dewi Olimpia karya Rick Riordan secara garis besar menampilkan cerita tentang mitologi Yunani dengan setting masa kini. Namun, Riordan tidak sepenuhnya menanggalkan manifestasi bangsa Yunani tersebut; termasuk di dalamnya ialah konsep tragedi dan pahlawan tragis. Menggunakan analisis struktural dengan berfokus pada struktur faktual (plot, karakter, dan setting), konsep tersebut dipelajari dan dianalisis untuk mengungkap bagaimana wujud representasi tragedi Yunani dalam karya ini. Di dalam representasi tragedi ini, terdapat pula konsep pahlawan tragis. Dalam penelitian ini, karakter Luke Castellan dipilih sebagai obyek penelitian karena dianggap sebagai karakter yang memenuhi kriteria pahlawan tragis. Menggunakan teori Hierarki Kebutuhan Maslow, karakterisasi Luke Castellan ini dipelajari dan dianalisis. Dalam hemat penulis, Hierarki Kebutuhan Maslow dianggap tepat sebagai indikator untuk menganalisis motivasi Luke Castellan di balik setiap tindakan yang mengantarkannya pada kejatuhannya sendiri. Sejalan dengan kedudukannya sebagai pahlawan tragis, beberapa kebutuhan Luke tidak terpenuhi (harga diri dan aktualisasi diri) Sebagai dampaknya, di akhir plot, kekurangan-kekurangan tersebut mengantarkannya pada kejatuhan.

Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson and the Olympians series presents a story about Greek mythology in modern setting. However, Riordan does not completely detach the Greek's manifestation; including the concept of tragedy and tragic hero. Using the structural analysis approach focusing on factual structure (plot, character, and setting), this concept is studied and analyzed to reveal the representation of Greek tragedy in this work. In this representation of tragedy, there is a concept of tragic hero. In this research, the object is Luke Castellan because he fulfills the requirement as a tragic hero. Using Abraham Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, the characterization of Luke is studied and analyzed. In writer's viewpoint, Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs is a precise indicator to analyze Luke's motivation of doing the acts which lead him to his downfall. In line with his status as a tragic hero, Luke is lack in some of his needs (self-esteem and self-actualization). As the result, in the end of the plot, those failures bring him to his downfall
